These telecom companies sure seem to have mastered the art of making ads that tug at your heartstrings – more so if you happen to be an Indian. The recent ads of Vodafone 3G (Uncle’s ice-cream) and Bharati Airtel (of the employee who is getting retired) are a case in point. I hate them for playing with my emotions. And I hate myself for allowing them to do so. But the truth is that I make sure I watch the ads in their entirety every time I see them aired.
Chandigarh, Dehradun Trip – An Epilogue
Like I said before, when I embarked on this trip, my brain knew that I should not expect Dehradun to be like the hill stations shown in the 60s-70s Hindi movies. But my heart had its expectations set. Fortunately, it wasn’t a case of total heartbreak.
As far as Chandigarh goes, I liked the city and its orderliness. I loved my trip to Rose Garden and Rock Garden. I would recommend both to anyone who is going there – with the caveat that you should be prepared to walk for a considerable distance. A stroll along the bank of the Sukhana Lake should definitely be a part of the itinerary. Just be sure not to eat at that Chaat shop. If you aren’t keen on standing in queues for hours on end, inquire in advance if it will be crowded at the Mansa Devi temple on the day you plan to visit. Just be careful about the locals trying to block the vehicles at the last turn before the entrance. Sign off with a visit to Nada Sahib Gurudwara. The peace and tranquility there is probably just what the doctor recommended for detox.
I cannot give a lot of pointers for eating and shopping in Chandigarh. But if you have a sweet tooth, you must try the Gulabjamuns at Sindhi Sweets. A visit to The Honey Hut can be made if you are looking for honey-based products.
And now for Dehradun. Sahastradhara was a big disappointment. Inquire in advance which is the best time to visit. Robber’s cave might be fun if you are adventurous enough to attempt to get into the cave – I don’t know how safe that is - or if you don’t mind a bit of a trek to a temple and a panoramic view. If you want to go to the Khalanga War Memorial, make sure you have the exact directions. If you like visiting temples, do visit Tapkeshwar Temple. Set aside some time to visit Mindrolling Monastery. Don’t forget to buy packs of Stick Jaw toffees. Do check out Nathu’s if you are interested in buying sweets.
If you come from a warmer side of the country (like I do from Mumbai), be sure to pack proper thermal wear.
And then sit back, relax and enjoy your trip – not just the destinations but the journey as well. Because that’s how the memories are made, isn’t it? :)
