Recipes For Disaster

When I watched 'Turban Tadka' (Food Food Channel) for the first time, I wasn't too impressed. In fact, I had got irritated by the number of times Chef Harpal Sokhi kept saying 'Oye'. But over the past few months I have watched quite a few episodes of the program and so have become sort of used to it as well as his frequent 'ohoho, kya baat hai ji'. He gives recipes that can be tried out for daily lunch or dinner with ingredients that can be easily found in household kitchens. I had tried making 'Gobhi Takatak' and 'Aaloo ki Launji' and both had turned out to be tasty. Encouraged, I tried his recipes for 'Amritsari Dum Aaloo' and 'Aaloo Tamatar Rassewale' - both of which failed spectacularly. :-)

Now, when it comes to 'Firangi Tadka', I watch its episodes with interest but rarely try any dish because more often than not, owing to its international cuisine, some of the ingredients are not part of the typical Indian kitchen. You can use soya or chilli sauce often but a bottle of oyster or fish sauce can remain unused in the fridge for months. Flipping through the notebook in which I jot down the recipes, I came across 'Mirchiwale Paneer' one day. Tried it and lived to regret it.

Guess I have a long road to travel when it comes to being an expert cook :-)
Have you noticed that this year the movie channels are airing movies like 2012, The Core and The Day After Tomorrow with alarming frequency? One can only hope that as we move closer to the day the world is supposed to end, they will come to their senses and won't contribute to the panic that might be setting in. :-(

देऊळ

'देऊळ' बद्दल बरंच वाचलं-ऐकलं होतं. खरं तर चित्रपटगृहात जाऊनच चित्रपट पहायची इच्छा होती. पण वेळा अडनिड्या त्यामुळे नाहीच जमलं. स्टार प्रवाह वर ह्या रविवारी दाखवणार म्हणून आधीपासूनच मोबाईलमध्ये रिमायन्डर लावून ठेवलं होतं. काल दुपारी आणि संध्याकाळी असं दोन वेळा प्रक्षेपण असलं तरी दुपारीच बघायचं ठरवलं.

तशी कथा काय आहे ह्याबाबत थोडीफार कल्पना होती. पण चित्रपट सुरु झाला आणि काही सीन्स (उदा नाना आणि सोनाली कुलकर्णी ह्यांच्यातला सागरगोटे खेळण्याचा तसंच गावचा शिक्षक् आणि त्याची बायको ह्यांच्यातला) पाहून चित्रपटाच्या नावाचा संदर्भ लागेना झाला. हे सीन्स टाकण्याचं प्रयोजन अजिबात कळलं नाही.

असो. तर खरं तर ही गोष्ट केशाची. गावातलं मोठं प्रस्थ भाऊ (नाना पाटेकर) (हे पाटील असतात का?) ह्यांची करडी गाय राखायचं, तिला चरायला न्यायचं काम करणारा भोळाभाबडा तरुण. चित्रपट सुरु होतो तेव्हा करडी काही दिवसांपासुन गायब असते आणि केशा तिला शोधत फिरत असतो. शोधता शोधता तो गावाच्या माळावर जातो तेव्हा अचानक त्याला तिथे ती दिसते. बरं वाटेनासं होतं म्हणून भाकरी खाऊन जवळच असलेल्या उंबराच्या सावलीत केशा दुपारी आडवा होतो. आणि स्वप्नात त्याला दत्तदिगंबर दिसतात. झालं! केशा बोंब मारत गावाकडे धावत सुटतो. वाटेत येणार्या गावकऱ्यांना 'कोण दत्त? कुठे दिसला?' काही अर्थबोध होत नाही. केशाचा ज्यांच्यावर जीव आहे असे अण्णा नेमके गावात नसतात. पण जेव्हा ते येतात तेव्हा ते केशाला असे अनुभव स्वत:जवळच ठेवायचा सल्ला देता. पण तोवर खूप उशीर झालेला असतो. गावात हॉस्पिटल व्हावं अशी अण्णांची खूप इच्छा असते आणि त्यासंबंधीचा आराखडाही ते बनवत असतात. पण धर्म आणि राजकारण ह्याची आपल्या देशात जी गल्लत झालेली आहे तीच ह्या गावातही होते. आपले राजकीय हितसंबंध जपण्याच्या नादात हॉस्पिटल बनवण्यासाठी आग्रही असलेले भाऊ देऊळ बांधायला तयार होतात. देऊळ बांधून होतं आणि मग सुरु होतो भक्तीचा बाजार जो ह्या साध्यासुध्या गावाला आणि गावकऱ्यांना आमुलाग्र बदलतो.

आपल्या देशात 'धर्म' ह्या विषयावर कुठेही काहीही बोलायची सोय राहिलेली नाहीये. असं असताना हा विषय परखडपणे मांडल्याबद्दल ह्या चित्रपटाशी निगडीत सर्वांचे जेव्हढे आभार मानावेत तेव्हढे थोडेच आहेत. देऊळ उभंही राहिलेलं नसताना बाहेरच्या जागांची दुकानांसाठी लिलावाने विक्री, पैसे जमवण्यासाठी शिक्षकांनी विद्यार्थ्यांना वेठीला धरणं, फुलं, फोटो, ताईत असल्या धार्मिक वस्तुंसोबत हिंदी सिनेमाच्या केसेटस वगैरे गोष्टीची सर्रास विक्री, चालू हिंदी गाण्यांच्या चालीवर रचलेल्या वेड्यावाकड्या आरत्या आणि भजनं, देव आणि देऊळ ह्यांच्या जीवावर गब्बर झालेले लोक ......सगळं सगळं स्वच्छ दाखवलंय. 'हे असं नाहीये' असं कोणी म्हटलंच तर त्यांना प्रभादेवीचं सिध्दीविनायक, महालक्ष्मी वगैरे देवळं बघून या म्हणावं.

अभिनयाबद्दल बोलायचं तर नाना पाटेकर भाऊ म्हटल्यावर मी कपाळाला हात लावला होता. पण नानाने ही व्यक्तिरेखा त्यातल्या विनोदी जागांसह मस्त उभी केली आहे. अण्णांनी बंगलोरला जाऊ नये म्हणून सांगायला भाऊ येतो तेव्हाचा त्याचा अभिनय सुरेखच. सोनाली कुलकर्णीने भाऊच्या बायकोचा ठसका छान दाखवलाय. आतिशा नाईकने सासूच्या टाचेखाली असलेली सरपंच चांगली साकारली आहे. केवळ कोटा आहे म्हणून निवडून आलेल्या पण नुसत्या बोलवित्या धनी असणाऱ्या अश्या बायका सरपंच गावागावात असणार. वा रे लोकशाही! 'हरिश्चंद्राची फेक्टरी' मधली विभावरी देशपांडे अगदीच छोट्या भूमिकेत होती. उषा नाडकर्णी मात्र 'पवित्र रिश्ता' तल्या सविताताई देशमुखच्या पंढरपुराच्या जत्रेत हरवलेल्या जुळ्या बहिणीसारख्या वाटत होत्या. संवाद फेकायची ढब, तेच आक्रस्ताळी बोलण. दिलीप प्रभावळकरांसारखा गुणी अभिनेताही समजूतदार माणसाच्या भूमिकेत "स्लॉट" झाल्यासारखा वाटतोय. प्रभावळकर 'भाऊ' म्हणून आणि नाना 'अण्णा' म्हणून कास्ट केले गेले असते तर? केशाचं काम करणारया अभिनेत्यानेही देव दिसला म्हणून हरखून गेलेल्या आणि नंतर 'ह्या सगळयाला कुठेतरी आपणच जबाबदार आहोत' म्हणून व्यथित झालेल्या केशाची भूमिका छान वठवली आहे.

चित्रपटाचा शेवट 'शेवट गोड ते सगळं गोड' असं मानणार्या प्रेक्षकांना रुचणार नाही कदाचित पण तो वास्तवाला धरून दाखवला हेही स्तुत्यच. एकुणात काय तर हा भक्तीचा, देवाचा बाजार थांबवणं माणसाच्याच काय तर देवाच्याही हातात उरलेलं नसावं. हा बाजार कुठल्या थराला गेलाय ह्याचं वास्तव चित्रण पहायचं असेल तर 'देऊळ' नक्की बघा.

Graen?

What does the word 'Graen' mean? I came across it in Dev Anand's autobiography. Seems he and Sunil Dutt used to call each other that. He had given its meaning too but I have forgotten. I don't think that the word is from any Indian language because it has a foreign ring to it. The internet search didn't yield much. Is this going to remain a mystery for ever?

Speaking of Karma, there is a story about Swami Vivekananda that I had come across a few days back. Once, one of Swamiji's disciples asked him "If people suffer hardships as per their Karma, then aren't we interfering with it by reaching out to help them?" Swamiji quickly replied "They suffer as the result of their Karma but it is your Karma to help them". Sounds pretty logical, huh?

I remembered this story because of something that happened yesterday. I was on my way to the library when suddenly a child of about 8-10 years, a boy, appeared in front of me on the road. He was one of those people who hit themselves with a whip and then ask for money. Now, when I see a child begging it is always a struggle between wanting to help him or her but not wanting to encourage begging at the same time. He hit himself with the whip with such a force that I jumped out of his way to avoid being lashed by the end of it. In confusion I just crossed the road. When I was on the other side I felt bad. Fine, I didn't want to give him any money but I could have easily bought some food - a pack of biscuits or a bottle of flavored milk and given it to him. That would have given him some nutrition. But I guess I didn't want people to start staring at me. :-(

All the way to the library I was kicking myself. But then the opportunity to help that kid was gone. Finally, I made peace with my mind by promising myself that if I see that kid again, I will give him some food - and won't give a damn about whosoever decides to stare at me.
Then there is another story about J. Krishnamurti. It seems he was touring outside India giving lectures. A Britisher used to always attend these lectures but then a few days later he stopped coming. He had lost his grown-up son and was so heartbroken that he lost interest in life itself. When he did come back one day, he couldn't contain himself when he heard Mr. Krishnamurti talking about life and philosophy. "What's the use of all this wisdom to me who has lost his only son?" He shouted. Mr. Krishnamurti, so the story goes, just looked at him and the Britisher remembered many of his past lives. He recalled that throughout these lifetimes he had lost his near and dear ones many times. He had himself died many times. It is said that at that instant he realized that it was futile to mourn the death of his son of this life.

Frankly, this story didn't appeal to me fully. I believe in rebirths but it is hard to believe that with one look someone can make another person remember such lifetimes. Again, anyone who believes that a person is born again and again to work out his or her Karma understands that the very concept makes all relations sort of temporary, confined to this life only. But to be free of their entanglement surely isn't something that can happen in a jiffy.
