BBC's 'Witness History' is one of my favorite podcasts. The other day I was binge-listening (not sure if this term exists!) to the latest episodes. There was one episode on the great famine in Greece in 1943 - after Germany and its allies occupied it. A 94-year old woman, named Athina Cacouri, who was living in Athens during that time shared her horrifying experiences. I could not believe that the situation was made worse by a naval blockade by Britain and its allies.
Something that the woman said towards the end of that episode will always remain with me. I quote:
It is wrong to believe that you have friends in nations. Friendship does not exist in nations. It exists between people. Countries are wild animals and big countries are even worse.
I think a lot of leaders who call every visiting head of state their dear friend would do well to remember this.
However, the billion dollar question is 'Who will bell the cat?'
