Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.

Tech Up Your Loo

Alright, so they say technology is good. But sometimes I do think that they do go a bit overboard when it comes to cutting edge technology products. If you want to know what I mean, check out "Tech Up Your Loo".

In my humble opinion, Toto robotic washlet, Water Pebble, Potty Mouth and Samsung Body Scale are wonderful products. But a musical showerhead? A sensor mirror? Waterproof TV? Come on.

Oh, and the Glow in the Dark Loo Roll is just too spooky. I would definitely think twice before visiting the loo at night if there is a toilet roll emitting 'funky green glow' - reminding me of little green martian people - lurking in its depths :-)

A Disaster Called Chinese Tomato Egg Drop Rice

This recipe was demonstrated on a cookery show on Zee Marathi channel (Amhi Saare Khawayye). It looked yummy on screen. In fact, too yummy to make me forget the cardinal rule that I don't usually like any dish that has a lot of tomatoes - the only exception to the rule being, of course, the Tomato Soup. So I decided to try my hand at it today. Here goes the recipe:

Heat oil. Add finely chopped garlic. Saute till it turns brown. Add the onion part of spring onions. Saute and add already prepared white rice. Boil 2 eggs, leave aside the yolk, finely chop the white part and add it to the rice. Add green part of spring onions, salt, pepper and a dash of vinegar. Mix.

Boil 2 cups of water. Add 2 spoonfuls of tomato ketchup. Then add finely chopped tomatoes and tomato puree. Let it cook. Then add salt, pepper, (corn starch + water), soya sauce and vinegar. Let it come to a boil. Beat only the white part of an egg and add to the gravy.

While serving, pour the gravy on the rice.

To the best of my knowledge, I followed the recipe faithfully. But I think the reason it didn't work for me is because the gravy doesn't have much of a spice except for pepper. It tasted as if I have added a bowlful of tomato soup to rice. And, to be sure, I never did like Tomato Rice.

So, sadly, this one goes down as an experiment not worth repeating in my cookbook. :-(

Korean Barbeque Chicken with Kimchi Salad

While the Tomato Egg Drop Rice was nothing to write home about, this one turned out to be a hit - despite me deciding to make it just to mitigate the risk of having only Tomato Egg Drop Rice for lunch. Boy! Do I know Risk Management or what!

Without much ado, here is the recipe (from another episode of the same program on Zee Marathi channel - Amhi Saare Khawayye):

Cut the boneless chicken in thin slices and add them to a bowl. Add dry roasted sesame seeds, sugar, salt, chilli flakes, sesame oil, finely chopped ginger, finely chopped garlic, finely chopped onion and spring onion (the green part). Mix thoroughly. Shallow fry red dry chillies and make their paste with water. Add this paste to the chicken along with soya sauce and vinegar. Marinate for 15-20 minutes.
(I let it marinate for a good 3-4 hours)

For the Kimchi Salad - Mix together red chilli paste, finely chopped ginger, dry roasted sesame seeds, fish sauce, salt, spring onion (the green part), sesame oil, vinegar, sugar and pepper. Add cabbage leaves, cucumber pieces, thin slices of onion and mixed sprouts. Add pineapple pieces, if you want. Mix well.
(I am not going to add ginger next time I make it because it gives a rather sharp taste to the dish)

Shallow fry the chicken pieces with little oil.

Put iceberg lettuce in the plate, add kimchi salad on it. Then add tomato slices and finally add the barbequed chicken.

Love In Bombay

Alright, so Joy Mukerjee's 'Love In Bombay' is getting released on 2nd August. This one is a sort of the last offering of the trilogy after 'Love in Simla' (with Sadhana) and 'Love in Tokyo' (with Asha Parekh). Wahida Rehman is cast opposite Joy. The late brothers Ashok Kumar and Kishor Kumar are also part of the cast. The music, I believe, is by Shankar-Jaikishan.

I want to go and see this movie because Golden Era movies have always been my weak spot. I kind of regret not being born in that era. I probably would have ended up watching movies every weekend. So here is my chance to watch one such movie in the cinema hall. If I do end up watching the movie, I will surely let you know :-)

A Confederate Girl's Diary

Presently I am reading Clive Cussler's 'The Sea Hunters'. This book details his efforts to trace the ships that were lost during America's civil war. In one of the chapters, I found reference to the following book:

A Confederate Girl's Diary by Sarah Morgan Dawson.

So I am adding it to my list of books. Incidentally, it is available under the Gutenberg project.

Garlic Butter Idli

Dabur Honey

If there is one ad that makes me crawl up the walls every time I see it, it is Dabur Honey's. The way Bipasha Basu picks up a french fry and asks her husband/boy friend if she can eat just one positively makes my blood boil. Her husband/boy friend looks surprised (or pretends to be!) and then generously says 'yeah, why not?'. Then she asks him if it would make her get fat.

For God's sake! If you want to eat French Fries, eat them woman. Just make sure you burn them off by exercising. Why do you need someone else's permission to eat and their opinion about your appearance?

Don't these ad people pause to think about what stereotypes they are propagating by these careless ads? Absolutely disgusting!
