I suspect that the joy of not being bombarded with spam SMSs after the TRAI directive was rather short-lived. Since the new year, I have been observing an increase in the number of these unsolicited messages. More often than not, they are plain annoying but once in a while there comes an SMS that puts a smile on your face right in the middle of a busy day, just when you think that you don't have time even to smile. Here's part of one such gem from VLCC:

Distress yourself with Abhyangam and Shirodara

Wow, there are plenty of things in life to distress one, without having to shell out big bucks to VLCC for that. :-) Guess the person who put together this message is in serious need of 'de-stressing' himself or herself, what say? :-)

A friend sent me this SMS:

Expectation is a gift, not a curse
When people expect something from you, it means you have given them a reason to believe in you.

I disagree. More often than not, the expectations fall in 'Unrealistic' category. That's because when we expect something from someone we are thinking only about ourselves, and hardly about the other person. I wouldn't necessarily call Expectations 'a curse' but I wouldn't call them 'a gift' either.

अनोळखी दिशा - स्टार प्रवाह (शुक्र-शनि रात्रौ ९:३०)

नारायण धारपांची पुस्तकं वाचायची असं मी अनेक दिवस ठरवते आहे. पण हिम्मत होत नाही. उगाच पुस्तक वाचायचं आणि रात्री जागून काढायच्या - सांगितलाय कोणी नसता उपद्व्याप, नाही का? पण त्यांच्या गोष्टींवर आधारित सिरीयल लागतेय म्हटल्यावर बघायचा मोह काही आवरला नाही. दुर्दैवाने, १-२ अपवाद सोडता ह्या सिरीयलने निराशाच केली असं म्हणावं लागेल. :-(

मनातली इच्छा पूर्ण करणारया शक्ती असलेला पंजा 'Monkey's Paw' ह्या गोष्टीतून परिचयाचा होता त्यामुळे कथेत काही नाविन्य वाटलं नाही. पै-पै जमवून बांधलेलं घर ते बांधणाऱ्यानेच घश्यात घातल्यावर आत्महत्या करणारया आणि त्याचा सूड घेणार्या माणसाची कथाही बरीच Predictable वाटली. आपल्याला हवं ते एका तान्ह्या बाळाच्या अतृप्त आत्म्याकडून मिळवणार्या माणसाची गोष्ट वेगळी होती पण अभद्र वाटली. मागल्या आठवड्यातली भूतकाळातून आलेल्या माणसाची कथादेखील पटली नाही. म्हणजे 'समीरा' हा 'चंदी'चा पुनर्जन्म असतो का? नसेल तर त्या भूतकाळातून आलेल्या माणसाला स्पर्श करताच तिला त्याबद्दल कसं आठवतं? ती आईवडिलांसाठी भूतकाळातून पत्र पाठवते त्यात स्वत:चा उल्लेख 'समीरा' असा न करता 'चंदी' असा का करते? काहीच खुलासा झाला नाही. नाही म्हणायला 'हिरवं फाटक' ही कथा आणि तिच्यावर आधारित एपिसोड चांगला वाटला.

सिरीयलमधल्या बऱ्याचश्या पात्रांचा अभिनय तकलादू वाटतो. महेश कोठारेनी एक तर एपिसोडच्या सुरुवातीला यावं नाहीतर शेवटी. मध्येमध्ये येऊन बोलल्याने रसभंग होतो. दोन मराठी वाक्यांच्या मध्ये ते इंग्रजीत का बोलतात हेही एक गूढच आहे. :-)

एकुणात ही सिरीयल पहात राहिले तर मला पूर्वीइतका धारपांच्या कथा वाचायचा हुरूप उरणार नाही असं वाटू लागलंय. त्यापेक्षा ही सिरीयल पहाणं बंद करून पुस्तकंच वाचलेली बरी :-)

To Cut A Long Story Short - by Jeffrey Archer

I recently finished reading this collection of stories from one of my favorite authors. The cover at the back rightly said that every reader will have his/her favorites. Though it was a delightful collection, the stories that I liked the most were 'A change of Heart' and 'The Endgame'. Since I cannot discuss why I liked them without revealing their end, I will refrain from doing so. But if Archer is someone whose books you reach out for, then you shouldn't miss reading this one, if you haven't read it already :-)

Currently I am reading 'The Litigators' by, who else but, John Grisham - another favorite author :-)
