Five of the seven girls who used to sit at a lunch table at Stonecroft Academy are dead over the course of twenty years. Catherine Kane in a car accident, Cindy Lang in a skiing accident, Gloria Martin in a suicide, Debra Parker in a plane crash and Alison Kendall in a drowning accident. Coincidence? Maybe. But they have died in the exact same sequence in which they used to sit. Coincidence? Maybe not. Now the last two of that lot - Laura Wilcox and Dr. Jean Sheridan - are in town for the 20th re-union of their class. So also are four of their classmates who have made it big in the world - Carter Stewart, Mark Fleischman, Gordon Amory and Robby Brent. And then there is Jack Emerson who is in-charge of the re-union.
Each one of them, except for Laura, has painful memories of growing up in the town. But each has his or her own reasons to be there. And so does The Owl. The Owl has set its eyes on Laura as its next victim but doesn't mind killing other women who happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. And The Owl knows about Lily, the daughter that Dr. Sheridan had to give up for adoption 18 years ago.
Detective Sam Deegan is racing against time as Laura disappears, Dr. Sheridan keeps getting faxes implying threat to her daughter and the bodies start piling on at an alarming rate. Which of their classmates is behind this? Will he be able to save the last two girls from the lunch table? Will he finally find out who killed Karen Sommers all those years ago?
If whodunit novels that keep you guessing right till the moment you turn the last page are your forte, then this book is for you. I won't say another word. :-)
P.S. In case you wonder who in the hell is Alison Kimball (page 168), just know that somehow no one noticed the mixup of Alison Kendall and Peggy Kimball. Ouch!
