Funny how we sometimes don't realize that we are being extremely rude to someone, and yet, are able to point fingers when x is rude to y.

I had scheduled a long-due appointment for a hair-trim and facial last Saturday morning. As the guy was trimming my hair, someone at the front desk came to ask him something. I am not sure what the lady asked and what he said because I was lost in my own private world. But then I was jolted out of it when she said in a high-pitched tone "Answer only what I asked you about. I don't want any pearls of wisdom from you.". The guy must have been embarrassed to death. Fortunately, there wasn't anyone else within earshot. I debated whether to ask him to shrug it off. Then I thought it best to act as if I didn't hear anything. But, nevertheless, I thought the lady could have acted with a bit of tact.

And then it struck me that I wasn't myself very polite just that morning. It so happened that I had scheduled facial after the haircut that morning. Just as I was about to step out of the house, I had got a call informing me that the girl who usually does my facial was not well and wouldn't be in that day. They were booked throughout and so if I wanted to reschedule it, I could do it on Sunday. Needless to say, I lost my cool. I had scheduled some other work on Sunday morning and that plan would go right out the window because of this. I blew out all my steam on the poor girl who had called - fully knowing that it was not her fault. I should have known better than to schedule an appointment with the girl who for the past few weeks has been having some health problems. I had finally ran out of steam and cooled down. I had said sorry to the girl and scheduled an appointment for Sunday. I had apologized to her again when I spotted her in the salon.

But in that particular window of 2-3 minutes or so, I wasn't at my polite best. So I really didn't have any right to comment on someone else's window of 2-3 minutes, did I? :-(
The rains are absconding for 2 straight days now. Another day like this, and people will start wondering about what happened to all the predictions of a good monsoon this year. Most of the country has this love-hate relationship with it. Can't live with it, can't do without it :-)
Here we go again! Just when I was talking about investments, a piece of news that makes me wonder whether there is any point in breaking my head over long-term investments ;-)

An Australian scientist has said that human species will be extinct in another 100 years. This comes closely on the heels of a prediction by a Cambridge professor. He has warned of a cataclysmic event in 2014. So if we survive 2012, next hurdle is going to be in 2014 - that is if no one predicts any doomsday event for 2013.

Guess Hollywood should make all the "Apocalypse Now" types of movies in 2010 and 2011. :-) The clock is ticking folks! :-)
So it's IRDA that gets to govern ULIPs now. I guess we should be thankful that we were spared a long-drawn legal battle between the 2 regulators. It could be a case of mere perceptions but frankly I trust SEBI more than IRDA. The insurance regulator has been too slow in bringing out changes to help the investors. I am not about to trust them in a hurry. So I am going to steer clear of ULIPs at least in the foreseeable future.

जिंदगी है और दिल-इ-नादाँ है
क्या सफ़र है और क्या सामान है

Story of life for most of us, isn't it? But this heart is what makes all of us human. So folks, don't always think with your brain. Thinking with your heart is good for health too. At least sometimes it is :-)

Have a nice week ahead!
I have this thing about hospitals. I mean the moment I step into one, I feel like turning back on my heels and heading right out again. But I had a reason to go to one this week. Nothing serious - just a mild ear irritation and I could not find any standalone ENT specialist. I waited for 2-3 days for the problem to correct itself. It didn't. So I had no choice but to go to this multi-speciality hospital that my family has a membership into.

I had the membership card so I didn't have to fill up any form at the reception. Thank God for that! Filling up a form on an ordinary day is trial enough. Imagine doing it when you have throbbing pain in one of your ears. :-( I paid up and headed for the doctor's room.

They have 4 wings on each floor and a sort of general seating area in the middle. When I reached the floor that the ENT specialist was on, this central area was full of people. I stepped into one of the wings and handed over my receipt to one of the guys. I was told I will have to wait for 10 minutes. A door separated the wing from the seating area. But from time to time people would walk in or out and I would catch a glimpse of people waiting there - some with a worried look on their faces, other looking at their watches. Some talking on phones, others staring into space. I was counting minutes - literally.

Just then a woman walked by - her mouth covered by a protective mask - the kind that had come into vogue when the country was gripped by H1N1. I wasn't sure whether it was for protecting herself from the germs in the atmosphere or for protecting others because she was sick. But either way, it added to my uneasiness.

Fortunately, I was called by the doctor just then. Minutes later, I walked out, greatly relieved that, today at least, I would be walking out of the belly of the beast within minutes. As I headed out, an ambulance, its siren wailing loudly, turned right in.

Honestly, I don't know how the doctors and staff manage this - day in, day out. Hats off to them!
About 3-4 days back when I was reading The Mint I was shocked to read about the 60+ days' blockade that was gripping the whole of the Northeastern state of Manipur. I am sure I didn't see anything about it on the news channel that I watch - at least not anything on the "Breaking News" front. That was strange. Or maybe not. The Media in general ignores the North-Eastern states the way the central government does.

It was yesterday that I heard about the situation slowly returning to normal though the commercial vehicles are still not plying the national highways according to the news report. It is worrying though that the central government chose to turn a blind eye to the steadily worsening situation for days. Do we really want these states to break away? :-(
