Seriously. What was this story about again? Let me get this straight. Oscar knew his sister was dead and he kidnapped Alfredo to lead Holmes on a wild goose chase across the drug dens just to prove it to him that Holmes was every bit an addict as he was? The word 'far-fetched' wouldn't do justice to this plot. And didn't Holmes catch on that Oscar didn't seem too worried about his sister all the while that they were looking for her? And finally ended up falling off the wagon?

I am seriously wondering if I should bother watching the next season.

Supernatural, Season 10 Finale

I could feel it in my bones that this wasn't going to end in anything good. And as is customary, it would leave the viewers in limbo till the next season is aired. So I sat down to watch the Season Finale with a sort of resigned frame of mind. Was Sam going to be dead? Cass? Or was it Crowley? The chances of all of them left standing by the time the credits rolled by were looking slimmer by the minute. And yet, here's the final score card:

Dean alive and without the Mark - Good.
Sam alive and on good terms with Dean - Good.
Cass alive and with his powers intact - Good.
Crowley alive - Good, probably. But we will know in the coming season(s) since he isn't the Friendly Neighborhood King Of Hell anymore.
Rowena with the decoded book of curses - Bad, very bad, very very bad. As the character of Rick says in The Mummy - We are all in very serious trouble.

And finally:

The Darkness unleashed on earth - wait a minute, hasn't it been here for some time now? Wonder how things could be worse for humanity!

गाथा इराणी - मीना प्रभु

हे पुस्तक वाचायची दोन कारणं - एक म्हणजे ह्या लेखिकेची लायब्ररीत जितकी पुस्तकं आहेत ती सगळी वाचायचा चंग मी सध्या बांधलाय. पण दुसरं आणि महत्त्वाचं कारण हे की इराण सारख्या देशात मुद्दाम प्रवासी म्हणून मी जायचा संभव जवळजवळ नाहीच. इस्लामचा घट्ट पगडा असलेला, बायकांना हिजाब घालायला लावणारा हा देश. तेव्हा पुस्तकातूनच त्याच्या संस्कृतीची, तिथे रहाणाऱ्या लोकांची माहिती मिळणं शक्य होतं. तरी हे पुस्तक वाचेतो 'चादोर' ह्या प्रकाराची मला माहितीच नव्हती. हिजाब आणि चादोर अशी दुहेरी कसरत करत हा देश उभाआडवा पिंजून काढणाऱ्या लेखिकेला मी मनोमन साष्टांग दंडवत घातला.

इराणची आणि आपली ओळख म्हणजे मुंबईतल्या रस्त्यारस्त्यांवर (पूर्वी) हमखास दिसणारी इराणी हॉटेल्स. ह्यापैकी माझं फेव्हरेट म्हणजे फोर्टचं कयानी किंवा क्यानी. ह्यांच्या सांस्कृतिक मूळाची फार छान माहिती ह्या पुस्तकातून मिळते. अजूनही त्या काळातल्या ऐतिहासिक वस्तू तिथे आहेत. त्या आपल्याला कधी पहायला मिळणार नाहीत ह्याचं दु:ख झालं. पण लेखिकेने ह्या वास्तूंचं साग्रसंगीत वर्णन करून हे दु:ख कमी जरूर केलंय. शिवाजीपार्कच्या सेनापती बापटांच्या पुतळ्याजवळ असलेल्या 'लाईट ऑफ भारत' च्या मालकाच्या कुटुंबातलं तिला तिथे कोणीतरी भेटलं हे वाचून 'दुनिया बहोत छोटी है' चा साक्षात्कार झाला आणि मजा वाटली. एखाद्या देशाच्या सरकारची जगातली वागणूक आणि तिथल्या आम जनतेचा परदेशी लोकांकडे पहाण्याचा दृष्टीकोन ह्यात किती जमीन-अस्मानाचा फरक असू शकतो ह्याची जाणीव हे पुस्तक वाचताना प्रकर्षाने होते. शहाच्या काळात इथे लोकांना, विशेषत: स्त्रियांना मोकळेपणी वावरण्याची मुभा होती हे वाचून आश्चर्य वाटलं. आताच्या काळातल्या स्त्रियांवर तिथे असलेल्या बंधनाबद्दल वाचूनही त्यांच्यावर विश्वास बसेना. बायकांचे केस बघून पुरुषांच्या मनात वाईट विचार येतात म्हणून त्यांनी हिजाब आणि चादोर घालायचं हे वाचून तर हसावं का रडावं तेच कळेना. ह्या असल्या देशात जन्माला न घातल्याबद्दल देवाचे शतश: आभार मानले.

पूर्ण इराणमध्ये फक्त केशराचे पट्टे ओढलेला भात, कबाब, दही, नान, काकडी आणि टोमेटो एव्हढंच खायला मिळतं हे वाचून मात्र मी इराणी पाककलेबाबत सर्च करून पाहिलं. बऱ्याच वेबसाईटस् आणि नानाविध पाककृती हाती लागल्या. मग लेखिकेला भेटलेले लोक फक्त ह्याच गोष्टी का बनवत होते ह्याचा उलगडा काही झाला नाही.

रुचिपालट म्हणून 'गाथा इराणी' नंतर एक इंग्रजी पुस्तक वाचलं. त्याबद्दल लिहेनच. पण आता ते जवळपास वाचून संपत आलं असल्याने आज लेखिकेचं 'तुर्कनामा' आणायचा विचार आहे.
