४. भवताल (दिवाळी अंक २०१९) (रुपये २५०)

भवतालचे देवराई आणि जलव्यवस्था अंक मागल्या दोन वर्षी वाचले होते. त्यामुळे ह्या वर्षी अंकाकडून अपेक्षा बऱ्याच वाढल्या होत्या. पण अंकाने जराशी निराशाच केली.

तज्ञ मंडळी जेव्हा एखाद्या विषयाबद्दल सर्वसामान्य लोकांनी वाचायच्या प्रकाशनात लिहितात तेव्हा सर्वसामान्य लोकांना समजेल अश्या भाषेत लिहिणं अपेक्षित असतं. मग त्यात फार शास्त्रीय परिभाषा टाळणे, इंग्रजी शब्द लोकांच्या परिचयाचे असतील तर उगा मराठीतले जड प्रतिशब्द न वापरता इंग्रजी शब्द वापरणे, लेखात माहितीचा पसारा न मांडता थोडे मुद्दे घेऊन पण त्यावर विस्ताराने लिहिणे, एकंदर लिखाणाचा बाज आटोपशीर आणि सहज आकलन होण्यासारखा ठेवणे अशी अनेक व्यवधानं सांभाळण गरजेचं असतं. पण इथे दुर्लक्ष झालं तर ते लिखाण रुक्ष, कंटाळवाणे आणि नीरस होऊन बसतं. ‘महाराष्ट्राच्या मातीतील जीवांचा पट उलगडून दाखवणारा विशेषांक’ अशी थीम असलेल्या ह्या वर्षीच्या अंकातल्या काही लेखांचं दुर्दैवाने नेमकं तेच झालंय.

त्या लेखांचा उहापोह करायच्या भानगडीत न पडता जे लेख माहितीपूर्ण, रंजक आणि समजण्यास सोपे आहेत त्यांच्याविषयी लिहिते. पहिला लेख ‘दख्खनचे जागतिक बंध उलगडताना’. ह्या लेखात वरदा खळदकर ह्यांनी आता जिकडेतिकडे दिसते ती महाराष्ट्रीय अस्मिता म्हणजे नेमकं काय हे प्राचीन काळातील पिकं, प्राणी आणि खाद्यसंस्कृती ह्या सर्वांचा आधार घेऊन स्पष्ट केलंय. प्राचीन महाराष्ट्रात आढळणाऱ्या चित्रकला आणि शिल्पकला ह्यावरचा श्रीकांत प्रधान ह्यांचा लेख नक्कीच वाचण्याजोगा. नाणी आणि शिलालेख हा माझा अत्यंत आवडता विषय. डॉक्टर पद्माकर प्रभुणे ह्यांचा लेख म्हणूनच मी मोठ्या उत्सुकतेने वाचला. खरं तर त्यांनी अधिक विस्ताराने लिहायला हवं होतं असं वाटलं. ‘वनस्पतींचे कुळ आणि मूळ’ हा लेख तर माहितीचा खजिना आहे कारण त्यात भाज्या, धान्य, फुलं, औषधी वनस्पतीं आणि फळं ह्या पाच वर्गांत कोणती देशी आणि विदेशी पिकं आहेत त्याचं विस्तृत विवेचन आहे. आणि एव्हढं असूनही हा लेख अजिबात रटाळ झालेला नाही हे विशेष. बागकामात आणि शेतीत रुची असणाऱ्यांना हा लेख नक्की आवडेल असाच आहे.

वेरूळच्या लेण्यातल्या भित्तीचित्राच्या गिलाव्याच्या एका तुकड्यावरून त्यात कोणते घटकपदार्थ आहेत ह्याच्या घेतलेल्या शोधाबद्दल डॉक्टर मिलिंद सरदेसाई ह्यांनी एक छोटेखानी लेखात सांगितलं आहे. अशीच एक शोधकथा सुनील भोईटे ह्यांनी लिहिलेय - ‘पत्थरचाटू’ किंवा ‘पालमासा’ ह्या नावाने ओळखला जाणाऱ्या माशाच्या शोधाची.

डॉक्टर योगेश शौचे ह्यांनी महाराष्ट्रात राहणाऱ्या जीवाणूंची ओळख ‘जीवाणूंच्या विश्वात’ ह्या लेखात करून दिली आहे. कधी कोणाचं लक्षही जाणार नाही अश्या सर्वसामान्य गवतातही किती प्रकार दडलेले आहेत ह्याबद्दलची मनोरंजक माहिती प्रा. डॉक्टर श्रीरंग यादव ह्यांच्या ‘गवतांचे असणे’ मध्ये मिळते. पश्चिम घाटाच्या प्रदेशनिष्ठ पक्ष्यांवर धर्मराज पाटील ह्यांनी तर प्राण्यांवर डॉक्टर संजीव नलावडे ह्यांनी छान लेख लिहिलेत. हे दोन्ही लेख अधिक विस्तृत असते तरी चाललं असतं. महाराष्ट्रात आढळणाऱ्या काही वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण देवराया आणि त्यातल्या अनोख्या वृक्षांची माहिती विनया घाटे ह्यांच्या ‘अधिवासी देवराया’ मध्ये मिळते.

तुम्ही महाडी, डांगी, तिवश्या ह्या तांदळाबद्दल ऐकलंय? सावा, भादली, बरटी ही तृणधान्ये माहित आहेत? इरवड आणि माळीव ह्या मिश्र पीक पध्दतीबद्दल काही माहिती? मलाही हे काही माहित नव्हतं. तांदूळ म्हणा, गहू म्हणा की कुठलं दुसरं अन्नधान्य. काही जाती सोडता आपल्याला त्यातला फरक कळत नाही. पण ह्या अन्नधान्यांच्या दर्जेदार स्थानिक वाणांबद्द्ल आणि ती टिकवण्याच्या प्रयत्नांबद्दल जाणून घ्यायचं असेल तर विजय सांबरे ह्यांचा ‘गावरान वाण’ हा लेख वाचावा असाच आहे. नुसती पिकंच नव्हेत तर बैल, घोडा, गाय, शेळ्या-मेंढ्या ह्यासारख्या प्राण्यांच्या देशी जातीबद्दलसुध्दा ह्या लेखात वाचायला मिळतं. बदलतं हवामान माणसाच्या शारीरिक आणि सामाजिक परिस्थितीत कसा बदल घडवत गेलं ते डॉक्टर सुभाष वाळिंबेनी आपल्या ‘माणसाच्या पाऊलखुणा’ ह्या लेखात फार छान समजावून दिलंय. त्यापुढला डॉक्टर शौनक कुलकर्णीचा लेख गोंड, कोरकू, वारली, भिल्ल आदी आपल्याला माहित असलेल्या आणि मल्हार कोळी, दुबळा, पावरा अश्या कधी नावंही न ऐकलेल्या आदिवासी जमातींची आणि त्यांच्या रीतीभाती, सणांची ओळख करून देतो.

मूळच्या इथल्या नसलेल्या आणि स्थानिक वृक्षांना घातक ठरणाऱ्या झाडांची लागवड कशी धोकादायक ठरू शकते ते केतकी घाटेंचा लेख वाचून लक्षात येतं. तर ‘परदेशी वनस्पती सरसकट वाईट असं म्हणणं चुकीचं आहे. त्यांचा अतिरेकी वापर टाळला आणि त्या बेफाट वाढणार नाहीत एव्हढी काळजी घेतली म्हणजे झालं’ असा विचार मांडणाऱ्या विनया घाटे ह्यांच्या लेखाने अंकाची सांगता होते.

सुरुवातीला म्हटल्याप्रमाणे अंकातले पहिले काही लेख वाचून निराशा झाली खरी पण नेट धरून बाकीचा अंक वाचल्याने मनोरंजन आणि ज्ञानप्रबोधन असं दुहेरी समाधान पदरात पडलं.

३. लोकसत्ता (दिवाळी अंक २०१९) (रुपये १४०)

लोकसत्ताच्या दिवाळी अंकात नेहमीच वैचारिक खाद्य मिळतं हा आजवरचा अनुभव असल्याने अंक मोठ्या उत्सुकतेने उघडला.

पहिला लेख विश्वनाथन आनंदवरचा. बुद्धिबळ खेळणाऱ्या लोकांबद्दल मला नेहमीच प्रचंड आदर. आनंदबद्दल आजवर पेपरमधून वाचलं असलं तरी त्याच्या कारकिर्दीबद्दल अथ पासून इति पर्यंत माहिती नव्हती. तशी ती करून घेण्याचंही काही कारण नव्हतं. सिध्दार्थ खांडेकर ह्यांच्या लेखाने ती झाली. आणि ती वाचून ह्या आयुष्यात बुद्धिबळाची निदान एखादा सामना समजण्यापुरती तरी ओळख करून घ्यावी अशी एक नोंद आधीच मोठ्ठी असलेल्या माझ्या लिस्टमध्ये झाली  हजारो ख्वाहिशे ऐसी.....

पुढला ‘स्थलांतर’ ह्या विषयावरचा लेखविभाग थोडा निराशाजनक वाटला. कारण ह्या विषयावर आधीच पेपरातून रकानेच्या रकाने भरून लिहून आलंय, येतंय. त्यामुळे हा विषय लोकसत्ताने दिवाळी अंकासाठी निवडावा ह्याचं थोडं आश्चर्य वाटलं. ‘भारत कधी कधी (च) माझा देश आहे’ हा गिरीश कुबेर ह्यांचा लेख सोडला तर बाकीच्यात तोच तोच मजकूर आहे असं वाटलं. ह्या विभागातले शेवटले ४ लेख त्यात का घातलेत असाही प्रश्न पडला. उदा. सत्यजित रेंच्या लग्नावरचा विजय पाडळकर ह्यांचा लेख छान आहे पण ‘स्थलांतर’ ह्या विषयाशी त्याचा काय संबंध ते कळलं नाही. मनोहर चंपानेरकर ह्यांनी हेडन, मोझार्ट, बेथोवन आणि शुबर्त ह्या चार पाश्चात्त्य संगीतरचनाकारांबद्दल चांगली माहिती दिली आहे. पैकी मोझार्ट आणि बेथोवन ऐकून माहित होते. बाकी दोघांविषयी आता कळलं. इतिहास सत्यघटना म्हणून कधीच नोंदवला जात नाही तर एखाद्या विचारप्रणालीला सोयीस्कर म्हणून लिहिला जातो हे श्रद्धा कुंभोजकर ह्यांनी त्यांच्या लेखात मांडलेलं मत एकदम पटलं. अतुल देऊळगावकर ह्यांचा एमेझोनच्या विध्वंसावरचा लेख अस्वस्थ करून गेला. एमेझोनच्या जंगलात लागलेली आग विझवण्यासाठी जी-७ च्या देशांनी दिलेली मदत नाकारण्याचा करंटेपणा करणाऱ्या ब्राझीलच्या अध्यक्षाना आपल्या प्रजासत्ताक दिनाच्या सोहोळ्याचं निमंत्रण आहे हे वाचून ‘हरे रामा!’ अशी प्रतिक्रिया झाली होती. उभ्या जगात हे एकच राहिले होते का आमंत्रण द्यायला? असो.

दुसरा विभाग ‘नाटक’ ह्या माझ्या अतिशय जिव्हाळ्याच्या विषयावरचा. एकूण एक लेख अप्रतिम. मग तो शांता गोखलेंचा मुंबई-पुणेच्या पलीकडे मराठी नाटकं आजकाल का जात नाहीत ह्याची कारणं शोधणारा लेख असो वा लहान मुलांसाठीची नाटकं बसवताना आलेल्या अनुभवावर आधारलेला माधव वझेंचा लेख असो. नाटकाचे दौरे का कमी झालेत ह्यावर अभिराम भडकमकर ह्यांचा लेख प्रकाश टाकतो. नाटक म्हटलं की व्यावसायिक रंगभूमीच आठवते. पण संगीत, बालरंगभूमी, हौशी, प्रायोगिक, महाविद्यालयीन अश्या अनेक प्रकारच्या रंगभूमीबद्दल जयंत पवार ह्यांच्या लेखात वाचायला मिळतं. ’गांधीजी आणि व्यवहारी राजकारण’ आणि ‘आकाश धरतीको खटखटाता है’ हे दोन्ही लेख नाटकविभागात का घातलेत ते कळलं नाही. पैकी पहिला लेख गांधीजीच्या विचारप्रक्रीयेबद्दल चिंतन करणारा आणि वाचकांकडून करवून घेणारा असा आहे. दुसरा लेख ‘विनोदकुमार शुक्ल’ ह्या हिंदी लेखकाची ओळख करून देतो. हिंदी लेखकांचं साहित्य वाचायला हवंय ह्याची पुन्हा एकदा प्रकर्षाने जाणीव झाली.

तिसरा विभाग ‘वेब विश्व’. सध्या क्रेझ असलेल्या वेब सिरीज ह्या विषयावरचा. विभावरी देशपांडे, हृषीकेश जोशी आणि गिरीश कुलकर्णी तिघांचे लेख उत्तम. पैकी हृषीकेश जोशींचा लेख वेब सिरीज हे प्रकरण मुळात काय आहे इथपासून सुरुवात करून त्याचं अर्थकारण, ह्या इकोसिस्टीम मधले विविध घटक, त्यातल्या बऱ्यावाईट गोष्टी सगळ्याची यथास्थित छाननी करतो. मला हा लेख फार आवडला. तूर्तास तरी podcasts मध्ये रमले असल्याने वेब सिरीज हे प्रकरण मी समजूनउमजून दूर ठेवलंय. सध्या तरी त्यात पडण्याचा विचार नाही. पण पुढेमागे एखाददुसरी सिरीज पाहण्याचा विचार करायला मला ह्या लेखांनी भाग पाडलं हे नक्की. ‘इव्हिनिंग इन पेरीस’ ही डॉक्टर शरद वर्दे ह्यांची गोष्ट खास वाटली नाही. शेवटी काहीतरी ट्वीस्ट असेल असं वाटलं होतं. पण पदरी निराशाच आली.

शेवटच्या विभागात चित्रपटांच्या दुनियेत सध्या चलनी ठरलेल्या बायोपिक्सचा लेखाजोखा रेखा देशपांडे आणि अमोल उदगीरकर दोघांनी सुरेख मांडला आहे.

अंकाच्या सुरुवातीला थोडी निराशा झाली असली तरी पुढल्या लेखांनी ती उणीव नक्कीच भरून काढली. विचारांना चालना देणारं बरंच काही वाचल्याचं समाधान अंकाने पुरेपूर पदरात टाकलं.

Supernatural, S14, E02

Truth be told, I wasn’t particularly dying to see the second episode. I started watching it more or less out of habit and immediately groaned when Jack the Ripper made an appearance. I mean, seriously? The only saving grace seemed to be Rowena’s entry into the fray. This spunky woman has saved the Winchesters on more occasions than one. Now the playing field is evened out. Or maybe it has tilted more in favor of the Winchesters. If I have to take sides, I would any day pick Rowena over practically any ghoul / demon.

It took me a second to recognize Arthur Ketch though. Didn’t he look more chiseled in earlier episodes? Kevin Tran’s appearance wasn’t exactly a surprise. Given the fact that this is the very last train leaving the station, it is going to board as many passengers as it can, right? But I cannot, for the life of me, recall why Chuck cast him into Hell. Never mind. It was many seasons ago. Who cares? But it was sad to see him choosing to roam the earth instead of going back to Hell. Given the current state of affairs on earth, he should have taken his chances in Hell.

Amara is back! Wonder why Dean chose not to seek her help. Given the monotheistic nature of Christianity, I had been more than a little surprised to see God having a sibling. Her being sweet on a mere mortal like Dean had sounded nothing short of blasphemy. But like I said before, the series’ creators don’t seem overly concerned about ruffling a few orthodox feathers. Good for them! Chuck really pales in front of His sister. To be truly honest, I had smirked on seeing this nondescript wisp of a man as the earthly vessel of God. He seemed neither powerful nor particularly intelligent. But in retrospect, that seems to have worked out beautifully. In fact, if they had chosen someone looking like Thor, it would have seemed almost stereotypical - with his masculine build and Greek God like looks. Moreover, it wouldn’t have exactly fit in with God’s personality as has been revealed – more than a little unsure of Himself, a bit vindictive, narcissistic – over the course of the show.

That said, I almost clapped when Amara refused to help out Chuck and walked out on him. Very well done sis! Even God needs to learn a lesson or two every now and then.

Supernatural, S14, E01

I had meant to watch the last 2-3 episodes of S13 to remind me of the latest mess that the Winchesters had landed themselves into. But I forgot to tune in - with the result that by the time E01 of S14 started I was totally clueless about the plot. When I saw the cemetery I recalled that something had triggered open the gates of Hell unleashing the bad souls within into our world. As if we didn’t have enough of them here already. Ugh!

Honestly, I am getting rather sick of these demons with their tongue-twisting names that sound like some expensive medicine. What kind of name is Belphegor? I wonder if the writers conjure these names up out of thin air or if there is any mention of such names in the Christian religious books. Anyways, old Belphegor was just supposed to use Jack’s body as a vessel, right? Guess someone forgot to tell this to the actor because the demon seems to have inherited many of Jack’s mannerisms as well. Those sun-glasses do a nice job of hiding the hideous empty eye-sockets but I don’t know why they are driving me up the wall. I am sure the vampires won’t be happy either – after all it’s their birth-right to wear sun-glasses in broad daylight.

A question - in this day and age of Social Media, is it possible to quarantine a group of people by lying to them? Or was the mobile network knocked out when the Hell opened up? Another question – why was it necessary to show the souls bursting out of hell? It looks as if someone has set off last year’s leftover firecrackers. Hey, if we have believed in shape-shifters and other assorted ghouls for the last 13 seasons, we will believe that the souls are out of Hell when you tell us so. We don’t need any visual indicators. And Hell has two to three Billion souls? Man, that’s one Hell of an over-crowded place then. No pun intended.

Castiel would have been shown the door by now if he were in a corporate setup. He couldn’t even heal Sam. What’s the use of being an angel then, I say. He is in for serious trouble during appraisals for sure. :-)

Who shot at Sam BTW? Oh, right. God did. I don’t seem to recollect why though. And what’s with Chuck anyways? In the last season, He looked as if He had had a bad case of stomach flu. If you don’t want to be around to watch the show, then by all means leave. But there was simply no reason to spoil it for the rest of us. He is behaving exactly like a parent – either it’s my way or the highway. Can someone please tell Him that littering the universe with such messed up worlds is not at all environment-friendly.

All in all, the first episode was a massive disappointment. I am glad this is the last season.

P.S. I seriously hope Michael doesn’t show up before at least half the season is over. He looks and behaves as if he has just stepped out of a movie about a global disaster set off in motion by KGB, CIA, Mossad or one of their kind!

P.P.S. Did Belphegor make a derogatory reference to the Shivlinga  while describing his time on earth? Though the word was silenced and also erased out of the subtitles, it wasn’t difficult to guess what it was. Oh well, the series isn’t particularly reverential about any religion, least of all about Christianity. So no offense taken.

२. मुशाफिरी (दिवाळी अंक २०१९) (रुपये १५०)

भटकंतीची आवड असूनही आपल्याला वेळेअभावी हवं तितकं, हवं तिथे आणि हवं तेव्हा भटकता येत नाही. मग इतर भटक्यांनी केलेल्या भटकंतीबद्दल वाचून दुधाची तहान ताकावर भागवावी लागते. तसंही आपण कुठे सगळं जग फिरू शकतो, नाही का? तेव्हा मुशाफिरीचा दिवाळी अंक मी घेतेच.

ह्या वर्षीचा अंकही नेहमीसारखीच मेजवानी घेऊन आला. पहिला भाग ऑफ-बीट भटकंतीचा. ह्यात स्पेनमधल्या अस्तुरियास ह्या आपण कधीही न ऐकलेल्या ठिकाणी योगसाधना करणाऱ्या आणि ती शिकवणाऱ्या लोकांबद्दल अनिल परांजपे आपल्याला सांगतात. स्टोकहोमच्या शिल्पवैभवावरचा आशिष महाबळ ह्यांचा लेख, एका मित्राला सोबत घेऊन ३३ दिवसांत पूर्व-पश्चिमेची सात भारतीय राज्यं सायकलीवरून पार करणाऱ्या सायली महाराव ह्यांचं अनुभवकथन, उत्तर युरोपात काही खास प्लानिंग न करताही नियतीने पदरात टाकलेल्या काही अनमोल क्षणांबद्दल सांगणारा प्रीति छत्रेचा लेख आणि मूळची इराणी असून आता भारतात स्थायिक झालेल्या, सायकलवरून सात खंड आणि ६४ देश पादाक्रांत करणाऱ्या मराल यजार्लूची माहिती देणारा अदिती जोगळेकर-हर्डीकर ह्यांचा लेख म्हणजे रुचकर फराळाने गच्च भरलेलं ताट आहे.

दुसरा विभाग अनोळखी आशिया. ह्यात अझरबैजानचं बाकू (सायली घोटीकर), जोर्डन आणि इस्त्रायल (मोहना जोगळेकर), आर्मेनिया (कामिनी केंभावी), श्रीलंका (श्री.द. महाजन) आणि समरकंद (दिनेश शिंदे) ह्या ठिकाणांविषयी माहिती आहे. अझरबैजान, आर्मेनिया आणि उझबेकी समरकंद तिन्ही ठिकाणी राज कपूर अजूनही फेमस आहे हे वाचून गंमत वाटते. पैकी अझरबैजान आणि उझबेकीस्तान आधी युएसएसआरचे भाग असल्याने त्यात राज कपूर लोकप्रिय असल्याचं आश्चर्य वाटत नाही. पण आर्मेनियामध्ये तो कसा काय पोचला बुवा? अझरबैजान आणि आर्मेनियामध्ये राजकपूरसोबत मिथुन चक्रवर्तीसुध्दा लोकप्रिय असल्याचं वाचून मी तर खुर्चीवरून पडलेच. त्याचं ‘जिमी जिमी आ जा आ जा’ हे भयानक डोक्यात जाणारं गाणं तिथे भलतंच हिट आहे म्हणे. देवा रे! ‘पिकतं तिथे विकत नाही’ असा काही प्रकार आहे का काय हा? आणखी एक म्हणजे ह्या परक्य देशांत एक भारतीय म्हणून ह्या लेखक-लेखिकांना जो जिव्हाळा, प्रेम मिळालं त्याबद्दल वाचून मस्त वाटतं.

तिसर्या विभागात मेघालय आणि सिक्कीम बद्दल अनुक्रमे प्रकाश काळेल आणि यशोदा वाकणकर ह्यांनी लिहिलंय. चौथ्या ‘ग्रामीण देश, ग्रामीण परदेश’ मध्ये विंचुर्णी (अन्वर हुसेन) आणि जव्हार (स्मिता जोगळेकर) ह्या देशी ठिकाणांसोबत ग्रामीण ब्रिटनबद्दलही (जयप्रकाश प्रधान) वाचायला मिळतं. जिथून डोंगर दिसतील असं एखाद्या तळ्याकाठचं, छोटंसं टुमदार, झाडांनी वेढलेलं, पुस्तकांनी भरलेलं, पक्ष्यांच्या किलबिलाटाने गजबजलेलं घर असावं असं आपल्यापैकी कित्येकांना वाटतं. ते उभारणाऱ्या गौरी देशपांडेबद्दल कुतूहल वाटतंय. सगळे अंक वाचून संपल्यावर पुन्हा लायब्ररी जॉईन करेन तेव्हा त्यांचं ‘विंचुर्णीचे धडे’ आहे का विचारायला हवं.

चौथ्या विभागात हिमालयातल्या बुरान घाटीचा खडतर ट्रेक करणाऱ्या असीम आव्हाड ह्यांना साष्टांग नमस्कार घालावासा वाटतो. हे काही ह्या जन्मात आपल्याला जमणार नाही तेव्हा ह्याबद्दल वाचलेलंच बरं असं वाटून गेलं. चोपता व्हेलीला सोलो ट्रेक करणाऱ्या शैलजा रेगेनाही असाच साष्टांग घातला. पण हे मात्र आपल्यालासुध्दा जमून जाईल का असा विचार डोक्यात आलाच. पक्षी हा जिव्हाळ्याचा विषय असल्याने आशुतोष आकेरकरांचा भिगवणच्या बर्डीन्गवरचा लेख खास वाटला. हे सुध्दा कधी तरी केलं पाहिजे. पुन्हा एकदा ‘हजार ख्वाहिशे ऐसी’ ची जाणीव झाली.

शेवटचा विभाग नदीवरचा. ह्यात माधव मुंडल्ये ह्यांचा नर्मदेवरचा आणि सुहास गुर्जर ह्यांचा एमेझोनवरचा असे दोन लेख समाविष्ट आहेत. नर्मदा परिक्रमा पायी करणं ह्या जन्मी तरी शक्य नाही हे मला ठाऊक आहे. पण गाडीतून तरी करता येईल ह्या आशेवर आहे. आता एमेझोनवारी कधी जमणार ही नवी विवंचना लागली आहे J

थोडक्यात काय तर, घरी बसल्या बसल्या थोडं जग फिरून येता येईल ह्या हेतूने घेतलेल्या ह्या अंकाने माझ्या मरायच्या आधी फिरायला जायच्या ठिकाणांच्या लिस्टमध्ये अजून भर घातली. J आता बघू यात आयुष्य काय काय बघायची संधी देतं ते. तुमचीही माझ्यासारखीच गत असेल तर हा अंक नक्की वाचा एव्हढंच सांगेन.

१. अक्षरलिपी (दिवाळी अंक २०१९) (रुपये २००)

मला वाटतं मी अक्षरलिपीचा दिवाळी अंक आजपर्यंत विकत घेतला नव्हता. मेजेस्टीक मध्ये भर दुपारी जाऊनही ‘किल्ला’ मिळाला नाही. पण बाकी बरेच अंक होते. त्यातले काही घेता येतात का पाहू म्हणून सगळे चाळले. ह्यातला पहिलाच लेख ‘कन्नोज’ वरचा पाहून उत्सुकता वाढली. अनुक्रमणिकेत रिपोर्ताज सेक्शनही इंटरेस्टिंग वाटलं म्हणून अंक घेतला.

अनुक्रमणिकेनुसार जायचं तर पहिला विभाग कथांचा. खरं तर मला कथाविभाग फारसा आवडत नाही. तरी त्यातल्या त्यात ‘रु-ए-दाद-ए-सफर’ ह्या लांबलचक नावाची (अर्थ काय कोण जाणे!) मोनालिसा वैजयंती विश्वास ह्यांची कथा आणि ‘इनामातले दादा’ हे सुरेंद्र रावसाहेब पाटील ह्यांनी लिहिलेलं व्यक्तिचित्र दोन्ही आवडली.

पुढला भाग रिपोर्ताजचा. अगदी मन लावून वाचावा असा आहे. त्यात मनोज गडनीस अत्तराची राजधानी कन्नोजबद्दल सांगतात तर लेह-लदाख-कारगिलबद्दल अनोखी माहिती देतात ऋषीकेश पाळंदे. उसतोडणी कामगारांच्या मुलांच्या शिक्षणाची होणारी परवड आणि ती थांबवायला तळमळीने झटणार्या लोकांचं काम ह्याविषयी प्रगती बाणखेलेनी तितक्याच तळमळीने लिहिलंय. शर्मिला कलगुटकार क्षय झालेल्या बायकांच्या वाट्याला येणारे हाल आणि त्यातून उमेदीने, जिद्दीने उभ्या राहणाऱ्या बायका आपल्यासमोर उभ्या करतात. मिनाज लाटकर ह्यांचा भारतातल्या तिबेटी लोकांविषयीचा तर शर्मिष्ठा भोसलेंचा नागालेंडमधल्या बाकीच्या राज्यातून आलेल्या लोकांच्या जगण्यावरचा असे दोन्ही लेख आपल्याला विचारात पाडतात. खरं तर देशाच्या निरनिराळ्या भागातल्या दुसरीकडून येऊन स्थायिक झालेल्या लोकांचं आयुष्य हा एका दिवाळी अंकाच्या थीमचा विषय होऊ शकतो. असो. संदेश कुरतडकर ह्यांचा Gay Dating Apps  वरचा आणि मुक्ता चैतन्य ह्यांचा भारतातल्या लहान मुलांच्या वाढत्या पॉर्न साईटसच्या वापरावरचा असे दोन्ही लेख आपल्याला अंतमुर्ख आणि अवस्थ करतात. महेशकुमार मुंजाळे ह्यांचा पदरचे अनेक पदर उलगडून सांगणारा लेखही खासच.

केरळातल्या पुलीकालीवरचं सुरेख फोटोफिचर आणि बालग्राम तसंच सेवालय ह्या सामाजिक संस्थाच्या कामाची ओळख करून देणारे लेख अंक पूर्ण करतात. अंकात एकूण ११ कविता आहेत. पण कविता आणि माझं लहानपणापासून फारसं सख्य नाही त्यामुळे ह्यावर मी भाष्य करू शकत नाही J

एकुणात ह्या वर्षीचा अंक भावला. पुढल्या दिवाळीला अंकात काय आहे हे नक्कीच पाहणार.

My Podcast List - 4. Kit Patrick’s “History of India”

I have finally caught up with the current season of Kit Patrick’s “History of India” podcast. This podcast is a treat for anyone who is interested in India’s history.

A confession is in order. I almost gave up listening after its 1st episode. Kit fumbled a lot. There were lots of pauses. The Indian names got mangled & each episode was 40-45 minutes long. But I decided to eat the elephant one bite at a time. Kit’s presentation improved significantly right from the 2nd episode. No fumbling. No pauses. The narrative became crisper. The length stayed the same, the names were still mispronounced but by then I was hooked.

Kit makes it clear that the focus will mostly be on the city of Patliputra as it moves through the ages - the Mauryas (S1), the Kushanas (S2), the Guptas (S3) & King Harsha (S4). But we also hear about the Huns, the Chinese & Persian empires, the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Shilaharas & Pratiharas. There are bonus episodes on topics like the Southern kings (e.g. the Cholas), life in ancient India, literature, music, architecture & food. He reads from ancient sources at the end of each episode. And all this is delivered with a healthy dose of humor.

Now I am learning about the kingdoms of Nepal, Tibet & Kashmir (S5). My History teacher would be so proud :-)

My Podcast List - 3. Barbara Corcoran’s ‘Business Unu$ual’

The story of how I came across Barbara Corcoran’s ‘Business Unu$ual’ podcast is more interesting than the Arabian nights. Or not. But here it is. I heard about the podcast ‘Business As Usual’. When I checked it out, after a day or two, I looked for ‘Business Unusual’ instead!

I realized my mistake but the name ‘Barbara Corcoran’ sounded familiar. I had seen her in Shark Tank a few years ago. After a few episodes I couldn’t watch the panel grilling the entrepreneurs, eventually turning some down, & had tuned out. Though my chances of starting a business are slimmer than that of a snowflake in hell, this podcast in which she advises entrepreneurs sounded interesting – because the advice isn’t just for the entrepreneurs. Yes, she answers queries on how to start a business, how to increase sales, how to hire (& fire!) etc. but she also shares wisdom inherited from her parents & accumulated during her career. A lot of it is applicable to salaried folks. A lot of it is about life.

And she does it with so much of energy & warmth that if you listen at the end of the day, you feel charged enough to run a marathon. If I end up having even half of her energy & chirpiness at her age I would consider myself very lucky.

So every time she says ‘Listen in’, that’s exactly what I do.

My Podcast List - 2. BBC World Service’s ’13 Minutes To The Moon’

‘It’s rocket science’ I said to myself on hearing about BBC World Service’s ’13 Minutes To The Moon’ podcast.

I needn’t have feared. The science in this 12-part podcast about the 1969’s moon landing is easy to digest. The series begins with President Kennedy’s ‘We choose to go to the moon’ speech. We hear about Apollo 1 tragedy, about how Apollo 8 went ‘where no one has gone before’ and about Apollo 11’s planning & execution (the computers that seem primitive by today’s standards ran software on the moon for the 1st time!). Episode 11 contains the actual exchange between mission control & the astronauts during the final 13 minutes of the landing.

There are many ‘Houston, we have a problem’ moments – alarms from on-board computers, the Eagle moving too fast, Armstrong taking control, choosing a clearer site to land & landing with a few seconds’ worth of fuel to spare. Besides the astronauts, we hear about & from, others in mission control (their average age - 26-27!).

I hadn’t seen the Earth Rise photo taken from Apollo 8. It’s hard not to fall in love with the blue marble rising across the moon. That’s Home! Jim Lovell said it best – God has given us a stage on which to perform, how the play turns out is up to us.

Do take a listen. Trust me - it’s not rocket science!

My Podcast List - 1. BBC’s Witness History

Since childhood I have loved history, and hated it. I loved to read about people & events but hated memorizing the dates. History slipped out of mind after getting into college, it wasn’t part of the curriculum.

Lately I became re- interested in history. Reading has always been a passion but it is hard to find time to read, and harder to find history related books in the library (not to mention finding a library!). Then I discovered Podcasts. My phone didn’t have memory for an additional app so I used to listen to downloaded episodes while commuting.

One such podcast was BBC’s Witness History (as it’s called now). Every week (Mon-Fri) a separate historic event (political, religious, cultural, medical etc.) is covered in each episode, which is about 10 minutes long – easy to consume when you have a few moments to spare. The narrative is crisp, to-the-point and yet, manages to be full of details. The cherry on the cake is that we get to hear original recordings & opinions of those who witnessed these events (hence the name!).

My new phone is big enough to store a herd of dinosaurs & more. Though I listen to a lot of podcasts on an app, Witness History remains the favorite.

I have fallen in love with History. All it took was one podcast. And the rest, as they say, is history :-)
