Happy New Year

My last post for 2016. Another year is gone. I am sure each one of us has a collection of moments of happiness, frustration, anger, satisfaction and sadness belonging to this year. Each one of us must have been able to achieve something that we had thought of doing on January 1st, 2016. But if you are like the majority, there is a lot that is still left to be done. Our to-do list seems like a permanent 'work in progress', doesn't it? But then that's the beauty of life. If we achieved everything that we wanted to do, then life won't have any meaning anymore.

These days, the newspapers are full of articles that would have us believe that the world has become a more dangerous place in the past year. Maybe it is true, maybe it is not. I have stopped believing everything that is said on TV and in print. It makes you feel sad, helpless and dejected. Instead, I have begun to seek out news that is encouraging, that talks of people who are hellbent on making positive changes in their part of the world. I have begun to read about the little people who are dealing with whatever life is throwing at them with courage and who are refusing to give up. As far as I am concerned, only these people matter. Because they are humanity's best hope. They are doing what God (if indeed there is one!) had in mind for us when he put us on this planet.

I am determined to be one of these little people.

I don't know what you want out of 2017. But I am sure that I won't be very far off the mark when I say that may the Universe bless you with loving people, a satisfying occupation and the best of health.

पांगिरा, पानिपत, शोध, तडा...............

'डोक्याला भुंगा लावणारं आपण वाचू शकतो' ही १-२ पुस्तकं वाचून झालेली गैरसमजूत पुढल्या १-२ पुस्तकांनी पार धुळीस मिळवली. त्यातलं पहिलं पुस्तक म्हणजे विश्वास पाटील ह्यांचं 'पांगिरा'. एका छोट्या गावाची ही कहाणी. बदलत्या युगाचं वारं गावात शिरलं की काय होतं ह्याचं उत्तम चित्रण ह्यात पहायला मिळतं. ज्या सुधारणा होताहेत किंवा लोकांच्या कल्याणासाठी कायदे केले जात आहेत त्याची माहिती मोजक्या लोकांना असली की त्याचा ते कसा पुरेपूर फायदा करून घेतात आणि गरीब जनतेला नाडतात ते वाचून नुसता तिळपापड होतो. आपल्याला रोज दोन घास खायला मिळतात त्यामागे ज्याची ढोरमेहनत आहे त्या शेतकऱ्यांची ससेहोलपट 'सिस्टीम' कशी करते ते वाचायचं असेल तर 'पांगिरा' वाचावं. अर्थात अजूनही परिस्थिती फारशी बदललेली नाहीये म्हणा. निश्चलनीकरणाचा सर्वात मोठा फटका शेतकऱ्यांना बसलाय. पण इमोशनल डायलॉग मारून वेळ मारून नेणारे नेते आणि हतबल झालेले विरोधी पक्ष असल्यावर आणखी काय होणार. हे पुस्तक वाचून मी आजकाल जेवायच्या आधी 'वदनी कवळ घेता' म्हणून न दिसणाऱ्या देवाला धन्यवाद देण्याऐवजी शेतकऱ्यांना दुवा देते.

'पांगिरा' वाचलं आणि 'पानिपत' वाचायची इच्छा झाली. म्हणून लायब्ररीतून घेऊन आले खरी. पण कसलं काय. जेमतेम अर्ध वाचून झालं आणि लढाईला तोंड फुटायच्या आधीच उत्तरेला मराठी सैन्याचे झालेले हाल वाचवेनात. भाऊबंदकी, हेवेदावे, एकमेकांचे पाय मागे खेचण्याची वृत्त्ती, आत्यंतिक धर्मभोळेपणा असल्या सगळ्या सगळ्या सवयी मराठी सत्तेला पुरेपूर भोवल्या. उत्तरेत हाल होत असलेल्या सैन्याला रसद पुरवण्याऐवजी स्वत:साठी नवरी शोधण्यात वेळ घालवणारे नानासाहेब लवकर गेले तेच बरं झालं. असली माणसं असून काही उपयोग नसतो. नसली तर नुकसान कमीच होतं म्हणायचं. अर्ध पुस्तक वाचून बाजूला ठेवलं. आज वाचायला सुरुवात करू, उद्या करू असं म्हणेतो दोन आठवडे गेले आणि आता आपल्याच्याने काही हे वाचलं जाणार नाही हे ध्यानात आलं. तेव्हा मुकाट्याने पुस्तक परत करून आले. :-(

मग कोणीतरी 'शोध' सुचवलं. शिवाजीमहाराजांनी सुरत दुसऱ्यांदा लुटली तेव्हा जो खजिना मिळाला त्याचा काही भाग कधीच स्वराज्यापर्यंत पोचला नाही. तो खजिना मध्येच गायब झाला हे ऐतिहासिक सत्य. तेव्हाच्या आणि नंतरच्या काळातसुध्दा अनेकांनी त्याचा शोध घ्यायचा यत्न केला पण कोणाला यश आल्याचं ऐकिवात नाही. ह्यावर आधारलेली ही काल्पनिक कथा. अर्थात काही धागेदोरे सत्य असतील. पण सत्य आणि कल्पना ह्यांची एव्हढी बेमालूम सरमिसळ लेखकाने ह्यात केली आहे की त्यात फरक करता येत नाही. ऐतिहासिक मिस्टरी वाचायची हौस असेल तर ही कादंबरी नक्की वाचा.

खरं तर 'भैरप्पा' ह्यांचं 'आवरण' हे पुस्तक आहे का असं मी लायब्ररीत विचारलं होतं. ते काही मिळालं नाही पण बाकी पुस्तकांची चवड त्यांनी माझ्यासमोर ठेवली. त्यातून मी 'तडा' उचललं. आणि वाचायला सुरुवात केल्यापासून संपवेपर्यंत मेंदूला नुसत्या झिणझिण्या आणल्या. आत्यंतिक टोकाचा स्त्रीमुक्तीवाद काय विनाश करवून आणू शकतो हे त्यात प्रभावीपणे मांडलंय. अर्थात ह्यात पुरुषांची बाजूसुध्दा कधी कधी न्याय्य असू शकते हे दाखवायचा यत्न केला आहे तरी समाजात आजकाल जे घडतंय ते पाहाता शेकड्यात असे चूक नसलेले किती पुरुष असतील हा प्रश्न उरतोच. त्यामानाने इलासारखं वागणाऱ्या बायका जास्त असाव्यात हे कटू असलं तरी सत्य असावं. खरं-खोटं राम जाणे.

डिसेंबर-जानेवारी मध्ये लायब्ररीत गेले नाही. फेब्रुवारीमध्ये पुन्हा जाईन तेव्हा भैरप्पांची आणखी पुस्तकं वाचायचा बेत केलाय. पाहू किती तडीस जातो ते.

Pakke Paga Festival

The good folks at Nature Conservation Foundation wrote to let me know about the Pakke Paga Festival.

We are delighted to announce that the 2nd Pakke Paga Festival will be held in Seijosa between 16 – 18 January 2017. The festival will be organized on the banks of the Pakke River bordering the Pakke Tiger Reserve. This is the place where our Hornbill Nest Adoption Program is also being carried out.

Unlike the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, the focus here is as much on saving the diverse wildlife found in the area as it is on highlighting the diversity in local culture and people.

 The festival is being organized jointly by the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, Pakke Tiger Reserve management, District Administration, local Panchayat, Ghora-Aabhe Society, Government officers of various departments and local public leaders/civil society members. Along with NCF, several NGOs that work in the area are participating and contributing to the festival – WWF, WTI, Balipara Foundation, Help Tourism, IT Nature Club and also supported by Saevus and Sanctuary Nature Foundation (of Sanctuary-Asia).

We hope that this festival, in future, will become as important as the Nagaland Hornbill Festival, and that it will stand out for its uniqueness in terms of its focus being on celebrating wildlife. It is only possible through support from all of us who come in large numbers, recognize the efforts of the local community and also indirectly enable them to earn economic benefits through staying at their homestays and the Pakke Jungle camp and enjoying the local cuisine and apung (rice/millet beer).

Highlights of the festival will be: Nature walks (bird-watching, butterfly walks etc), jeep safaris, nature-based activities including tree planting and other activities with local school children and dedicated stalls to highlight the diversity of Pakke and the conservation efforts in the area. There will be also conventional activities that are part of the usual festivals in north-east India that include traditional dances, sports and cuisine.

तामिळनाडूच्या मुख्यमंत्री जयललिता गेल्यावर व्हॉटसएपवर आलेले काही मेसेजेस चांगलेच खटकले. जयललिता ह्या अविवाहित होत्या. त्यामुळे त्यांचा 'एकाकी राजकन्या' असा उल्लेख करून त्यांच्या मृत्यूसमयी त्यांच्या जवळचं असं कोणीही नव्हतं ह्यावर एक मेसेज होता. मला एक सांगा - जेव्हा पंतप्रधान मोदी किंवा अटलबिहारी वाजपेयी ह्यांच्यासारखे नेते जातील तेव्हा त्यांचाही ते एकाकी होते म्हणून उल्लेख होईल का? उत्तर दुर्देवाने नाही असंच आहे. त्यांच्या राजकीय कारकिर्दीबद्दलच लिहिलं जाईल. पण बाई अविवाहीत असणं म्हणजे मोठा सामाजिक गुन्हा असल्यासारखं लोक वागतात. तिने लग्न केलं नाही म्हणजे ती एकाकीच असणार हे धरून चालतात. तरी बरंय जयललिता म्हणाल्या होत्या की स्त्रीने मुलंबाळं हवी असतील तर लग्न करावं, आपल्याला सांभाळायला पुरुष पाहिजे म्हणून नाही. पण हे कोणी लक्षात घेईल तर ना.

असेच काही मेसेजेस त्यांनी एमजीआर ह्यांचा उपयोग करून राजकारणात केलेल्या प्रवेशावर होते. खरं तर जयललिता ह्या अत्यंत हुशार होत्या. हिंदी आणि इंगजी ह्या दोन्ही भाषांवर त्यांचं प्रभुत्त्व होतं. त्यांचं भाषण ऐकून इंदिरा गांधी सुध्दा प्रभावित झाल्या होत्या असं पेपरात आलं होतं. पण आपल्या पुरुषप्रधान देशात लोकांना हे दिसत नाहीच. दुर्दैवाची गोष्ट म्हणजे माझ्या एका सरांनी ज्ञानेश्वरांच्या कुठल्याश्या ओवीचा संदर्भ देऊन स्त्रीला रूप आणि बुद्धी दोन्ही असले म्हणजे ती त्याचा पुरेपूर उपयोग करून घेते असला काहीतरी मेसेज फोरवर्ड केला होता. ज्ञानेश्वरांच्या ओवीचा असला काही अर्थ असेल असं मला वाटत नाही आणि असलाच तर ती अत्यंत दुर्दैवाची गोष्ट आहे असंच मी म्हणेन. तसं मी सरांना कळवलंसुध्दा.

'देवलोक' च्या दुसर्या सिझनचे एपिसोड्स पहाताना देवदत्त पटनाईक जेव्हा देवीच्या शक्तीचा पुन्हापुन्हा उल्लेख करतात तेव्हा राहूनराहून वाटतं की देवीच्या शक्तीरुपाची पूजा करणारा आपला भारतीय समाज असा कसा बदलला? का हा दांभिकपणा युगानुयुगं चालू आहे? :-(

३. लोकसत्ता - दिवाळी अंक २०१६

'शितावरून भाताची परिक्षा' करावी असं म्हणतात. अंकाचं 'संपादकीय' वाचून हा अंक आवडेल अशी आशा वाटायला लागली. 'अंतरंग' ही अनुक्रमणिका बघून लेखांचे विषयसुध्दा मस्त वाटले.

आंतरराष्ट्रीय राजकारण हा माझा नेहमीच आवडीचा विषय राहिला आहे. त्या दृष्टीने 'पंतप्रधान ते अध्यक्ष व्हाया' हा पुतीन ह्यांच्यावरचा लेख खूप आवडलाच पण 'देशोदेशीचे ट्रम्प' ह्या सदरातले सगळे लेखसुध्दा अतिशय माहितीपूर्ण होते. अर्थात हे लेख मी २ महिने उशिरा वाचत असल्याने संदर्भ बरेच बदलले आहेत. पण ह्या लेखांत वर्तवलेल्या शक्यता आणि प्रत्यक्षातली परिस्थिती ह्यात किती साम्य आणि किती फरक आहे हेही त्यामुळे पाहता आलं.

'सजनवा बैरी हो गये हमार' हा गीतकार शैलेन्द्र ह्यांना 'तिसरी कसम' हा चित्रपट बनवताना आलेल्या अनुभवांवरचा, 'नेताजी फाईल्स' हा सुभाषचंद्र बोस ह्यांच्या गुढ मृत्यूवरचा आणि 'पेंक्रीची कमाल' हा स्वादुपिंडावरचा हे सर्व लेख सुध्दा सुरेख. 'पेंक्रीची कमाल' वाचून तर असं वाटलं की एव्हढ्या सोप्या भाषेत अधिक मेडिकल माहिती मिळाली तर मजा येईल. लोकसत्ताने ह्या विषयावरचं अनिल अवचट ह्यांचं सदर नव्या वर्षात सुरु करायला हवं. 'कार्यसंस्कृती: वर्ल्ड कॉर्पोरेट कंपन्यांची' ह्या सदरातले ३ लेख आणि 'शंभरीचा रणगाडा' वाचनीय. 'संस्कार महत्त्वाचे' मधली व्यंगचित्रं आवडली.

'अनवट भटकंती' मधले पोम्पे, काबुल, रोद्रीग्ज द्वीपसमूह, सुदान, उझबेकिस्तान, कंबोडीया हे सगळेच लेख वाचनीय. एव्हढंच आहे की ह्या जगात किती किती आणि काय काय बघायचं राहिलंय हे लक्षात येऊन थोडी खिन्नता आली :-) काबुल बघायला मिळायची शक्यता धुसर दिसते पण पोम्पे, उझबेकिस्तान आणि कंबोडीया माझ्या यादीत जाऊन बसलेत.

'शोध शेक्सपियरचा' हा लेख शेक्सपियर वाचला नसल्याने फारसा भावला नाही ह्यात चूक सर्वस्वी माझी. 'सर्जनचिंतन: आत आणि बाहेर' आणि 'एक सदारंग खयाल' हे दोन्ही लेख मात्र पूर्ण बाउंसर गेले.

थोडक्यात काय तर दिवाळी अंकांकडून मनोरंजन आणि ज्ञानवृद्धी ह्या ज्या दोन अपेक्षा असतात त्या ह्या अंकाने पुरेपूर पूर्ण केल्या त्याबद्दल माझ्याकडून १०० पैकी १०० मार्क्स :-)

Mumbai University Exhibition of Rocks, Minerals and Archaeological Antiquities

On Saturday I visited Mumbai University Exhibition at their Vidyanagari campus. This is apparently an annual event but I had never been there before. Needless to say, it was a worthwhile investment of time. The exhibition was a virtual treasure trove of coins, minerals, rocks, fossils (collected from Manjara and Narmada valley), stone tools, ancient pottery piece, Warli paintings, idols, ancient stone writings and more. I especially loved the fossil, coin and pottery collection.

Of course, the trip would have been a huge waste without shopping. :-) So I bought two clay replicas of the kind of stone tablets that were used in Mohenjodaro as means of exchange (at Rs. 50 each). Then 2 sets of ear-rings made of minerals (at Rs.100 each) and a 1-paisa coin from the 60s India (at Rs. 10). I had to drag myself away from the counter that was selling mineral boxes (at Rs. 500 each) with a Herculean effort.

As usual, I tuned into Times Now and CNN before going to bed a couple of nights ago. Times Now Breaking News was of the appointments of new chiefs for RAW, IB as well as armed forces. I didn't wait to find out if the tenure of the previous chiefs was coming to an end. It could very well be so but I am not able to get rid of the unsettling feeling that all this is in preparation for the war with Pakistan that many believe the present Indian government plans to wage during the last year of its power. After all, the reason why Dr. Raghuram Rajan wasn't asked to continue as RBI governor became crystal clear when Dr. Urjit Patel was seen mostly in the background during the whole demonetization exercise. Of course, I would be happy to be proven wrong because God knows war never did any good for anyone. Guess there is nothing more to be done but to wait and watch. :-(

The footage on CNN was even more unsettling. It seemed to be some hospital in Syria.....probably in Aleppo. A Muslim woman, her face covered in blood and dust, was repeatedly talking about someone being gone. A kid, maybe 13-15 years old, was carrying a bundle in his arms while doing his best to console the woman. I was afraid there was a baby in that bundle and prayed fervently that it wasn't dead or injured. The kid kept saying that the God will avenge Assad for what he has done to them. There were two more children covered in dust, their faces devoid of any emotion, who had got separated from their mother. They blankly tagged along with a woman who was searching for their mother. I knew I didn't want to watch but I couldn't move. And a tiny part of my brain was protesting that there was something inherently wrong about broadcasting people's suffering for the entire world to see. We want to celebrate happiness with others but most of us prefer to grieve alone. And most would resent if that grief became Breaking News. And yet I couldn't help but feel that that kid's comment about God punishing Assad was calculatedly made for the benefit of the cameras. I hated myself the moment that thought crossed their mind. But there it was - no getting away from it.

That's when the tiny letters in the top left of the screen caught my eye. It said something to the effect that the footage might be disturbing. With the sordid state that the world has been in for several years now, I wonder if people even know what being disturbed feels like anymore :-(

Frankly, I don't get Lucifer. I just don't. Why is he so obsessed with God? I am not sure how many children would want their parents around all the time. And he is an arch-angel, whatever that means. So why is he so upset that God isn't around 24*7. Hell, He is hardly around for us humans, if whatever is happening on earth is anything to go by. Do you hear us complaining? Then what's the big deal? Grow up man! If not, take your battle to the heaven and fight it out with Daddy once and for all. As if life isn't miserable enough for us mortals we have the arch-angel on our back. Whatever the case, I was happy to see the end of Vince Vincente. The guy used to creep me out thoroughly. By the time episode 7 ended, I found myself agreeing with Dean. The Winchesters along with Crowley and Castiel just didn't seem to have it in them to stop Lucifer. Wonder if he managed to take that fossilized angel feather with him.

I almost fell off the chair laughing when episode 8 showed Lucifer possessing the US President. That doesn't sound as bad as Donald Trump becoming the Prez, does it now? :-) For once, the British seem to have a solution for something. But a device capable of expelling an angel or demon from their vessel? Isn't that the stuff that X-Files were made up of? I almost expected special agents Mulder and Scully to make an appearance. But my happiness that Lucifer was back in the cage didn't last long. Why didn't the Winchesters ask Castiel to wipe the memory of the Secret Service? And why couldn't Rowena or Crowley abort Kelly's baby instead of asking Castiel to persuade her to do it?

Guys, please, don't ruin the rest of the season by making the Winchesters rot in prison and Crowley + Castiel chase after Kelly.

And finally, a note for Crowley - Sam looks cute in flannels. Period. :-)

These days, in addition to the regular BBC History Hour podcasts, I am listening to their World War II related podcats called 'War And Words'. They are of a shorter duration than the History Hour podcasts but prepared with the same meticulousness and detail.

I was however taken aback when in the podcast titled 'Hiroshima To Cold War' the narrator uttered the following words 'in 1947 India and Pakistan gained independence from Britain'. Excuse me? Do you mean to say that the British ruled India and Pakistan at the same time? Aren't you forgetting that before you left you made sure that you split the country in two, thus creating a lifelong headache for not only India but for the rest of the world as well? Aren't you aware of the fact that Pakistan didn't exist before 1947?

Really, I didn't expect this from the BBC. :-(

१०० डेज अर्थात झी मराठीवरचा पोरखेळ #२

'रात्रीस खेळ चाले' घाईघाईत गुंडाळली गेली (ह्यावर तर बरंच लिहायचं आहे!) तेव्हा महेश कोठारेनी आपल्या नव्या सिरियलचं घोडं पुढे दामटायला हे करवून आणलंय की काय अशी शंका आली होती. ह्या '१०० डेज' चे प्रोमोज 'कैच्या कै' सदरात मोडतील असे. एक तर आदिनाथ कोठारे तेजस्विनी पंडितच्या मानाने खुपच तरुण दिसतो. वर चेहेऱ्यावर कसल्याही भावांचा अभाव हे त्याच्या अभिनयाचं(!) वैशिष्ट्य. आम्हा प्रेक्षकांना दुधाने तोंड पोळलं होतं तरी ताक फुंकून प्यायची सवय नाही. त्यामुळे 'पाहू तरी काय आहे कथानक' म्हणून सिरियल पहायला सुरुवात केली आणि चिडचिड व्हायला लागली.

चुकांचे पाढे वाचायला कुठून सुरुवात करू? संवादलेखन घेऊ. 'रात्रीस खेळ चाले' चाच पटकथालेखक म्हणा, संवादलेखक म्हणा, ह्या सिरियलचं लिखाण करतोय हे ऐकलं होतं. तिथे 'घरात काय चाललाहा ते दिसता ना' सारखे दर एपिसोडला रिपीट होणारे संवाद होते तर इथे 'अजय ठाकूर च्या डेस्कवर एकही केस पेंडिंग रहात नाही' हे पहिल्या काही एपिसोडमध्ये डझनभर वेळा ऐकवून झालं. मग राणी, मीरा आणि नेहा तिघीनी एकाच एपिसोडमध्ये अजय ठाकूरला 'सॉरी तुम्हाला डिस्टर्ब करतेय' असं म्हटलं. वर तो किती हुशार आहे, किती कार्यक्षम आहे ह्याचं सारखं गुणगान. प्रत्यक्षात कृती शून्य दिसत होती.

आता हेच बघा ना.....

१. ह्या माणसाला पोलीस खात्याचा जावई असल्यासारखी एकच केस दिली आहे. पोलीस स्टेशनमधले बाकीचे लोक त्यालाच रिपोर्ट करताना दाखवलेत. मग बाकीच्या केसेस कोण बघतंय राव? का बाकी सगळं आलबेल आहे?

२. एखादी व्यक्ती गायब झाली की काही विशिष्ट कालावधी (२४ का ४८ तास ते मला आठवत नाहीये) उलटून गेल्याशिवाय पोलीस तक्रार नोंदवून घेत नाहीत. इथे मात्र मिसेस सरदेसाई ठाण्यावर हजर झाल्यावर ठाकुरांना निरोप गेला. बरं, तक्रार नोंदवून घेतली तर मग सगळ्या बाजूने तपास करायला नको? पण ठाकुरसाहेब मीराबरोबर धनंजयच्या पहिल्या बायकोला पाहून म्हणतात की आपली ओळख नाही. अरे, तिने काय स्वत: पोलीस ठाण्यात येऊन सांगायचं की मी धनंजयची पहिली बायको म्हणून?

३. धनंजयशी संबंधित कुठल्याही व्यक्तीची कसून चौकशी होताना दाखवली गेलेली नाही. जी झाली (उदा. ट्रक ड्रायव्हर) ती इतकी हास्यास्पद होती की त्याबद्दल न लिहिलेलंच बरं.

४. ठाकूर सरदेसाईंच्या बंगल्यावर जातात, राणी आत बोलावेपर्यंत सेक्युरिटीवाल्याकडे असलेलं रजिस्टर नुसतं चाळतात, 'मागच्या काही दिवसात इथे कोण आलं होतं' असं तोंडदेखलं विचारतात आणि राणीने बोलावल्यावर सेक्युरिटीवाल्याच्या उत्तराची वाट न बघता आत निघून जातात. ते रजिस्टर एव्हिडन्स म्हणून ताब्यात घ्यायला नको? सेक्युरिटीची चौकशी करायला नको?

५. राणीला धनंजयचं विल मिळालं आणि त्यात सगळी संपत्ती तिच्या नावावर आहे म्हटल्यावर तिचा धनंजय बेपत्ता होण्याशी काही संबंध नसेल हा निष्कर्ष काढून पोलीस मोकळे झाले. विलबद्दल तिला माहीत नसलं तर ती पैश्यासाठी नवर्याचा खून करू शकते किंवा माहीत असलं तर तिला खून करायचा मोटिव्ह अधिक आहे ह्या दोन्ही शक्यता आपल्याला सुचतात. पोलीस क्लीन चिट देऊन मोकळे.

६. धनंजयची बॉडी सापडायच्या आधी आणखी एक बॉडी सापडली होती तेव्हा ठाकुरांनी फक्त राणीला कळवलं. मीराला कळवून तिच्या डी.एन.ए.शी तपासणी करून पहायचं त्यांना सुचलं नाही? धनंजयची बॉडी सापडल्यावर तर तो ह्यांच्या टीममध्ये नुकताच जॉईन झालेला ठाकुरांचा शेजारी बॉसलाच विचारतो की आपला पुढला प्लान काय असेल. अरे बाबा, तू आधी पोलिसातच होतास ना?

७. धनंजयच्या बॉडीचा चेहेरा ओळखता येत नाही म्हटल्यावर अजय ठाकूर मोठा शोध लावल्याच्या थाटात म्हणतात 'बॉडीची अवस्था पाहता हा अपघात नसावा'. देवा रे!

ही असली पटकथा आणि संवाद लिहिणाऱ्या महाभागाला खुर्चीला बांधून इंग्लिश चेनेलवरच्या क्राईम ह्या विषयावरच्या सिरियल्स पहायला लावल्या पाहिजेत. पूर्वीच्या काळी एव्हढी ढिगाने चेनेल्स नव्हती. बापड्या प्रेक्षकाला काहीही दाखवलं तरी खपून जायचं. पण आजकाल तसं नाही. बाकीच्या शोजमधून पोलीस तपासांची खूप माहिती मिळते. वर्तमानपत्रात पोलिसांनी केसेस कश्या सोल्व्ह केल्या ते वाचून बऱ्याच वेळा त्यांच्या मेहनतीला आणि हुशारीला दाद द्यावीशी वाटते. असं असताना असला बाळबोध तपास दाखवून पोलिसांच्या हुशारीला ठेंगा दाखवल्यासारखं तर वाटतंच. पण कसलाही अभ्यास न करता पाट्या टाकायची वृत्ती आणि प्रेक्षकांना काय कळतंय, आम्ही दाखवू ते बघतील अशी गुर्मी ह्या असल्या सिरियल्समधून दिसते.

सध्या तरी मी उरलेल्या 'डेज' मधला एकही 'डे' न बघायची शपथ घेतली आहे.

Today morning someone forwarded to me two pictures of Queen Elizabeth and Duke Of Edinburgh - the accompanying text said that the two photos were taken 68 years apart, 68 being the number of years that the royal couple has spent in holy (Gosh!) matrimony. I could not help but think that many of us will wonder if we will even live long enough to be 68, let alone being married for so many years.

I looked at the pictures closely. The one taken 68 years ago shows a charming couple - an almost shy bride smiling happily at her husband and a dapper looking Duke is smiling back at his young wife. 68 years later, the wife is still smiling but I cannot quite figure out if the Duke is smiling back at her. Though he is far from keeping the proverbial British stiff upper lip, to call it a smile would be stretching the imagination all the way to the moon and back at least three times over. I am sure the husband brigade would waste no time in coming up with witty one-liners and other assorted humorous takes on the photos. But I would give the Duke a benefit of doubt - maybe he had indigestion or not enough sleep last night. Hell, either of those would wipe the smile off anyone's face - royal or not.

As I looked at the photos of the couple that is well into their 90s (The Queen is 90 and her husband is 95), I wondered about something else. Has the love and affection that they (might have) felt so many years earlier survived the test of time? There are plenty of reasons if the answer is a No and even someone like me who knows next-to-nothing about the British monarchy can guess at a number of them. She is the Queen and he is, well, the Duke. I must confess that I am not upto the mark when it comes to the distinction between dukes and barons and what-nots, my only introduction to them being the P.G. Wodehouse novels. But I am pretty sure they don't measure upto being the reigning monarch. And though the British males might not be as narrow-minded as the Indian males are about the wife being a step ahead of them in the race of life, I rather doubt if they will be over-the-moon about it. Then, the marriages of their children were far from being happy ones. The royal family has had more than their fair share of controversies over the years. Add to that the fact that in the present day and age, monarchies are not something that they once used to be. All this can take a toll on a relationship.

But enough of this pessimism. The eternal romantic that I am, I would rather look at the half full glass. It would be far more interesting to think about the reasons if the answer to the above question is a resounding (though, in all probability, impossible!) Yes. Oh, the possibilities are endless. Soulmates who the Universe conspired to bring together. A husband who is totally supportive of his wife's position and totally devoted to her (absolutely no symptoms of the Roving Eye!). A wife who is equally devoted to her husband. Their ability to set aside their differences and to agree to disagree. The sharing of common interests. The freedom & space to pursue their own hobbies and interests. Support in moments of grief. A healthy share of arguments and fights. An unshakeable belief in the relationship. And a deep all-pervading love that everyone tells us has the ability to endure anything and to conquer everything. Like I said, endless possibilities. And it all sounds as if it is possible 'in theory only'. I know :-)

In any other frame of mind, I would have refused to forward the photos as my way of protesting against their 300+ years of colonial rule. Especially if the British cricket team had defeated the Boys in Blue anytime in the recent past (if they have, I have no idea about it as I have stopped following the sports pages eons ago). But I have been brought up on the diet of the Hindi romantic films where no matter what happens in the rest of the movie, the hero manages to ride off into the sunset with his lady to live happily forever. Since the British no longer have the empire over which the sun reportedly never set, I guess we are fine as far as the sunset goes. :-)

So I forwarded the photos - but only to my female friends. I am sure there would have been sighs from the married ones and 'that's the kind of marriage I want' from the singles. As for my male friends, sorry guys, I didn't want to allow you the luxury of a smirk followed by the 'Poor Fella' comments.

Though I have no reason whatsoever to swoon over the British royalty, as a gesture of appreciation for the quintessential British dish of Shepherd's Pie (which I recently enjoyed at the British Brewing Company!), I will say this much - Long Live The Queen, and the Duke, of course.

२. लोकप्रभा, दिवाळी अंक २०१६

इंग्लिशमध्ये ज्याला 'without mincing words' असं म्हणतात तसं सांगायचं तर लोकप्रभाच्या दिवाळी अंकाने घोर निराशा केली. इतका फिक्का दिवाळी अंक मी आजवर पाहिला नव्हता. लोकप्रभाचे एरव्ही दर आठवड्याला जे अंक निघतात ते जास्त माहितीपूर्ण आणि रंजक असतात.

अख्ख्या अंकातले मला फक्त मोजून ५ लेख आवडले - पैकी आनंद कानिटकर ह्यांचा 'माझे काबुलमधले दिवस', आशुतोष बापट ह्यांचा 'पर्यटकस्नेही कंबोडिया' आणि डॉ. चारुता कुळकर्णी ह्यांचा 'दोब्रोदोश्ली सर्बियू' हे सर्व पर्यटनाबद्दलचे. चौथा 'एक सुंदर फसवणूक' हा चैताली जोशी ह्यांचा मालिकांच्या सेटबद्दलचा लेख मस्त माहितीपूर्ण वाटला.

आणि पाचवा लेख 'कुठे आहे मराठी सुपरस्टार'. ह्या लेखांत बरीच कारणं बरोबर मांडली आहेत. पण मला असा सुपरस्टार नसण्याचं मुख्य कारण हेच वाटतंय की आपण मार्केटिंगमध्ये कमी पडतो. हिंदीला राष्ट्रीय भाषा म्हणून जास्त प्रेक्षकवर्ग आहे. तसा कुठल्याही राज्यभाषेतल्या चित्रपटाला मिळू शकेल, निदान नेहमी, असं मला वाटत नाही. मराठी लोक एखादा साउथ इंडियन पिक्चर बघायला जातील का? तसंच आहे हे. म्हणून आपल्याला जास्त मार्केटिंग करायला हवं पण आधीच तोळामासा असलेल्या बजेटमध्ये हे जमत नाही. हिंदीतल्या कलाकारांबद्दल त्यांचे पिक्चर्स रिलीज होणार नसले तरी काही ना काही कुठेतरी छापून येत असतं. आपल्या लोकांबद्दल एकतर काही येत नाही किंवा आलं तरी जे फक्त मराठी लोकच वाचतील अश्या ठिकाणी येतं. पुन्हा त्यातही लेखात म्हटलं तसं ग्रामीण आणि शहरी ही दरी. उदाहरणच द्यायचं झालं तर लेखांत मिलिंद गवळी हा उल्लेख वाचल्यावर हा कोण बुवा असं मला वाटलं. मग फोटो पाहिल्यावर 'हा हिरो दिसतो कसा आननी' चा साक्षात्कार झाला. स्वप्नील जोशी, जितेंद्र जोशी, अंकुश चौधरी ही नावं जुनी म्हणून माहितीची. सिरियल्समुळे संतोष जुवेकर, सिद्धार्थ चांदेकर, वैभव तत्त्ववादी, अनिकेत विश्वासराव हे माहीत आहेत तरी भूषण प्रधान कोण हे कळायला गुगल करावं लागलं. तरी काहीही झालं तरी मकरंद अनासपुरे, सिद्धार्थ किंवा भरत जाधव ह्यांना 'सुपरस्टार' म्हणणं मला तरी नाही जमणार. कारण 'सुपरस्टार' हा dashing, handsome, larger-than-life असायला हवा अशी धारणा, चुकीचीही असेल कदाचित. पण त्यात ते बसत नाहीत. माझी handsome मराठी dude ची व्याख्या मिलिंद सोमण आणि समीर धर्माधिकारी ह्या दोन नावांत संपते. फार झालं तर गेला बाजार लोकेश गुप्ते. बस! मामला खतम!

बिग डेटा वरचा 'बिग डेटा बिग डेडी' ह्या लेखांत इंटरनेटवर सहज उपलब्ध होईल अशी माहिती ठासून भरायचं प्रयोजन मला अजिबात कळलं नाही. त्यामुळे ज्याला तंत्रज्ञानातलं काही माहीत नाही अश्यांसाठी लेख क्लिष्ट झालाय आणि ज्यांना त्यातली माहिती आहे त्यांच्यासाठी कंटाळवाणा. हे असे लेख मांडण्यात थोडक्यात गोडी ठेवली तर बरं असतं. त्यामानाने 'महागुरू......जन्मापासून मृत्यूपर्यंतचा' हा सुहास जोशी ह्यांचा युट्युबवरचा लेख बरा वाटला. तरी त्यात काही प्रमुख category मधल्या चेनेल्सची माहिती असायला हवी होती असं वाटून गेलं. 'रेशनकार्ड ते पासपोर्ट. बदलत्या कुटुंबाची बदलती गोष्ट' ह्या अगडबंब नावाचा लेख माहितीपूर्ण असेल कदाचित पण सुरुवातीचे काही परिच्छेद वाचल्यावर सोडून दिला. खूप यांत्रिक पद्धतीने लिहिल्यासारखा वाटला. तीच गोष्ट 'पर्यायी वृद्ध संगोपन व्यवस्था' ह्या लेखाची.दोन्ही लेख ऑप्शनल म्हणून सोडून दिले.

कथा स्पर्धेतल्या पहिल्या ३ क्रमांकाच्या आणि विशेष पुरस्कार वाली अश्या चारही कथा मला अजिबात आवडल्या नाहीत. त्यांचं बेतलंपण सहज जाणवत होतं. ह्या कथा अश्या तर उत्तेजनार्थ पारितोषिक मिळालेल्या कश्या असतील कोण जाणे. :-(

ह्या महिन्यात लायब्ररीतून पुस्तकं आणणार नसल्यामुळे विकत आणून ठेवलेले सगळे अंक वाचणार आहे. लोकसत्ताचा अंक काढून ठेवलाय. पाहू या काय वाढून ठेवलंय ते.

Supernatural, Season 12, E05 and E06

It is always difficult to follow the proceedings, at least for the first five minutes or so, when the plot refers to something from the past seasons - the case in point being the Thule Society. It was an interesting plot, what with the world's eternal fascination with the possibility that Hitler might not really have died in that bunker. Of course, it would be tough luck to discover that one is related to Hitler, harder still to live with that knowledge. For a moment I feared that the Winchesters will end up fighting both Lucifer and Hitler in the coming episodes of this season. And God help the world if the evil duo decided to team up. Nothing of the sort happened though. Thank God for small mercies. The only sour note was the bizarre comic behavior of Hitler. I am not quite sure why the creative team of Supernatural decided to reduce him to a joker.

I couldn't figure out the motive behind the sixth episode either. It wasn't as if Asa Fox had returned from some earlier season. Except for the fact that Mary Winchester had managed to save him from a werewolf and that he ended up being a hunter, I see no reason why an entire episode should be dedicated to him. In my humble opinion, the only moment in the whole episode that added something to the plot was when the Reaper Billie mentions that Mary doesn't feel that she belongs here. For an anxious moment or two, it felt like Sam and Dean would lose their mom once again. But mercifully Mary is yet to throw in the towel. I wish Amara had thought twice before sending Mary back. Some blessing it has turned out to be for the Winchester Boys! I am also not happy that Dean owes one to the Reaper now. I neither liked nor trusted the lady.

I just hope Mary Winchester doesn't decide to shuffle off her mortal coil anytime soon. I would hate to see Sam and Dean in pain.

P.S. Oh, and for the record, I am increasingly finding Sam to be cuter (He looks simply delicious in those FBI suits!) and more emotionally appealing than Dean. Certainly someone to take home to dear old Mama. :-)

आजकाल एफएम ऐकणं जवळपास बंद झालंय. ऐकते तेव्हाही शक्यतो गोल्डन एरामधली गाणीच ऐकते त्यामुळे नव्या हिंदी पिक्चरमधल्या गाण्यांशी फारसा संबंध येतच नाही. पण काही दिवसांपूर्वी एका संगीतवेड्या मित्राला ह्याबद्दल सांगितलं तेव्हा त्याने ७-८ गाणी पाठवून दिली. त्यातलं 'सुनो ना संगेमर्मर' अतिशय आवडलं. मग काय? रात्री झोपताना ऐकण्याचा परिपाठ झाला. त्याआधी त्याने पाठवलेलं 'बंजारा' सुध्दा बेहद्द आवडलं होतं. 'कोई मुझको यू मिला है जैसे बंजारेको घर' ह्या ओळीवर तर मी जाम फिदा झालेय.

नवी मराठी गाणी सुध्दा मी शक्यतो ऐकत नाही. पण ह्याच मित्राकडून हक्काने 'विठ्ठला कोणता झेंडा घेऊ हाती' मागून घेतलं होतं. तेही आवडत्या गाण्यांपैकी एक झालंय.

ही पारायणं होईतो "'ऐ दिल है मुश्कील' चं title song ऐकलंस का?" अशी पृच्छा झाली. चेनेल सर्फिंग करताना कुठल्या तरी सिरियलमध्ये लागलेलं ऐकलं होतं पण पूर्ण गाणं डाऊनलोड करून नव्हतं घेतलं. 'नाही' म्हटल्यावर तेही गाणं फोनमध्ये येऊन पडलं. तरी काही दिवस ऐकायला वेळ नाही झाला. मग एके रात्री झोपताना ऐकलं आणि अक्षरश: प्रेमात पडले गाण्याच्या. 'मोहताज मंजीलका तो नही है ये एकतर्फा मेरा सफर, सफर खुबसुरत है मंजीलसे भी'. फिदा फिदा फिदा!

आणि मग २-३ दिवसांपूर्वी चेनेल्स बदलता बदलता दिसला म्हणून बाकीची कामं करत करत '१९२० लंडन' पाहिला. '१९२०' पेक्षा बराच बरा वाटला. निदान भुताचे चित्रविचित्र चेहेरे दाखवले नाहीत म्हणून असेल कदाचित. त्यातलं जवळपास शेवटचं 'आज रो लेन दे' आवडलं. ते डाउनलोड करायला गेले तेव्हा '१९२०' मधलं 'वादा तुमसे है वादा' डाऊनलोड करायचं राहिलं होतं ते लक्षात आलं म्हणून तेही डाऊनलोड केलं.

त्यामुळे आजकाल झोपताना माझी अंगाईगीतं म्हणजे 'बंजारा', 'सुनो ना संगेमर्मर', 'ऐ दिल है मुश्कील', 'वादा तुमसे है वादा' आणि 'आज रो लेन दे'. मज्जानु लाईफ!!
