“Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think.”
I have never come across a more accurate definition of Politics than the above one. :-) Of course, this gem is just one of the many tricks and tips and techniques that are scattered about in this book as the author teaches us about what causes team-building to fail. Team-Building! The word sounds so positive and yet, those of us who have been tasked with taking care of teams know that it is one of the most difficult aspects of project management. I don't know if there are many ways to do it right, but I know that there are many ways to mess it up.
And one way to do it right is to understand what can make it go horribly wrong. Hence the 5-step model. The bottom-most step is 'Lack Of Trust'. The root cause of all evil, so to speak. That leads to 'Fear Of Conflict'. Where there is no conflict, there is 'No Commitment'. Without any buy-in, there is 'No Accountability'. And that means that everyone is worried about his or her own status that no one is paying any attention to the end result that they are supposed to achieve as the team.
Sounds familiar? I am sure it does. So if you want to learn about how to pull together a great team and read an interesting story while you are at it, this is the book for you.
