The Descendents

George Clooney hasn't been known much for his acting skills. The closest he has come to that is squinting his eyes & creasing his forehead while asking something with a confused look on his face or while giving an awkward smile. But when I was told that he has done some decent amount of acting in the movie 'The Descendents' my first reaction was to laugh it out. But I decided to give it a shot anyways. The TVs do come with a remote that changes channels at the press of a button, don't they? No worries there, no wasted time.

The story is about a guy, Matt King, who is average in the sense that he has a wife, 2 kids and a profession to keep him rather busy. What is not average is that his family owns a vast estate in the state of Hawaii. Then one day, his wife gets injured in some adventure sport and goes into coma with not a hope of ever coming out of it again. He is rather unsure of how to look after his younger daughter and so he brings back the elder one from her resident school. If the younger daughter is unruly, the elder one is a study in Disobedience. She doesn't get along with her father and somehow seems to resent her mom. Matt is perplexed at this till she tells him that his wife was cheating on him and that almost everybody knew about it except for him because he was just too busy. He wants to find out who is wife's lover was and is aided in this effort by his daughter and her rather idiotic boy-friend. The movie also has a subplot where Matt's extended family of cousins is trying to come to consensus about what to do of their Hawaiian estate.

I agree, this is not an Oscar-worthy performance from Clooney. But he does surprise you because he walks, talks and behaves like a father of 2 kids. It doesn't look as if some playboy has been trying his best to look like one. He seems reasonably frustrated, angry and confused - given his situation. And boy! does he look handsome even after all these years!

On a lighter note, I really loved one dialogue where Matt minces no words when he tells his daughter's boy-friend what he thinks of him - You are 100 miles away from Smartsville! :-)
