Just finished reading Agatha Christie's "Nemesis" :-) Can't help post the haunting lines that her detective Miss Marple thinks of on receiving Mr. Rafiel's letter after his death:

Ships that pass in the night and speak each other in passing
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness
